MCCOOK, Nebraska --June Huffman passed away Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at the Hillcrest NursingHome in McCook at the age of 95.
She was born Aug. 15, 1916, in McCook, the daughter of the late Cassie Theodore and Martha Ruth (Turner) Allen.
June grew up in McCook where she graduated from McCook High School in 1935. On July 18, 1937, June married Chester L. "Chick" Huffman at Oberlin, Kansas. They spent their married life in McCook where her husband was an engineer for the Burlington Rail Road.
June made her family the center of her life and was always pleased when she could share her baked goodies with family and friends. The homemade embroidered Christmas ornaments she crafted are still being enjoyed by her grandkids. June loved to feed the birds and protected the apple tree outside her kitchen window from any pruning. She was lovingly referred to as the grandma with the singing bird because she always had a canary. She enjoyed fishing with "Chick."
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in McCook.
June was preceded in death by her husband, C.L. "Chick" Huffman on Sept.5, 1977, and by one daughter, Linda Higgason on April 6, 2000; four brothers; Jim Allen, Jerry Allen, Don Allen, Dale Allen; and one sister, Jane Lyons. June is survived by one son, Gary Huffman and wife, Joyce of McCook, Nebraska; two daughters, Sue Howitt and husband, Gary of McCook, Nebraska and Joyce Moore and husband, Gordon of North Plate, Nebraska; one sister, Joan Inglis and husband, Gordon of Broomfield, Colorado; 12 grandchildren, Mike Huffman, Kim (Jerry) Niemeth, Lori (Jay) Emerson, Tammy (Randy) Mentzel, Darrell Howitt, Brett Moore, Shannon Moore, Daniell Moore, Justin (Cecilia) Ellis, Lisa Higgason, Jacque Higgason, and Quinton Higgason, 17 great-grandchildren, Kati (Michael) Latulip, Jesse Niemeth, Kelly Huffman, MaChelle Huffman, Matthew (Lucia) Allen, Robert Harms and Emily Miller, Sarah (Tommy) Dennis, Julie Emerson and Eric Swanson, Jacob Howitt, Tessa Howitt, Hannah Emerson, Nichole Howitt, Joshua Emerson, Luke Howitt, Grace Moore, Trinity Moore, and Zeta Ellis; nine great-great-grandchildren, Brooke Latulip, Quentin Harms, Desiree Dennis, Cadence Dennis, Madison Allen, Peightan Swanson, Wyllow Harms, Mitchell Dennis and Jocelyn Higgason; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation will be at Herrmann Funeral Home in McCook from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in Riverview Cemetery in McCook, with Pastor Gary Howitt officiating. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery.
