McCOOK -- Cloyd R. Peters died Sunday October 2, 2011 at the Hillcrest Nursing home in McCook, Nebraska at the age of 92.
He was born Dec. 22, 1918, in Red Willow County, Nebraska, the son of Ernest and Maggie (Woods) Peters. Cloyd lived his entire life on a farm southwest of McCook. Cloyd graduated from the 8th grade at Banksville one-room rural school.
On Nov. 25, 1939, Cloyd married Naomi Barrett in Oberlin, Kansas. Two children joined this family, Willis and Alice Jane.
He had a great desire for learning and reinventing most of his farm machinery. Always open minded, he tried new methods of farming. He was an amateur radio operator and studied to achieve his second class radio license. He also learned to fly and owned two airplanes, giving some of his family the desire to fly.
Cloyd's favorite book to study was the Bible and God blessed him with a great memory. He was very knowledgeable about God's Word. He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior in a revival meeting in Traer, Kansas. He was active in the Assembly of God Church in Oberlin, Kansas and attended the Assembly of God Church in McCook.
Cloyd was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi, on Oct. 9, 2006, an infant son, Sheldon Robert, in 1942, his parents, Ernest and Maggie, brother Melvin Peters and sister Betty Overby.
Cloyd is survived by one son, Willis Peters of Oberlin, Kansas and one daughter, Jane Pennock and husband Ron of McCook, Nebraska; one brother, Byron Peters and wife, Shirley of McCook; five grandchildren; Rick Peters and wife, Jill of South Dakota, Randy Peters and wife, Lynda of Oberlin, Kansas, Suzanne and husband, Craig Close of Florida, Ronda and husband, Phil Colling of Omaha, Nebraska, Bill Pennock and wife, Melanie of McCook, Nebraska; great grandchildren, Travis, Justin and wife, Erin Peters; C.J., Caleb and wife, Kelsey Garrett, Toby, Nolan and JiIlian Peters, Brandon Close, Julie Colling Babcock and husband, Nick and Danielle Colling, Shelby and Megan Pennock, Andrew Carpenter, Justin and Josh Sorensen of Canada; three great-great grandsons, Corbin and Brandon Babcock and Brody Peters.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, in the Oberlin Cemetery at Oberlin, Kansas with Rev. Royce Leitner officiating. Interment will be in the Oberlin Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the charity of the donors choice.
