MAYWOOD, Nebraska -- Wayne Lee Schurr, 38, of Maywood, Nebraska, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at Denver Health Medical Center in Denver, Colorado, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident west of Maywood.
Wayne was born on Oct. 30, 1972, at Gothenburg, Nebraska, to John L. and Kay Schultheiss Schurr of Farnam, Nebraska. He graduated from Medicine Valley High School in 1991 at Curtis, Nebraska. He was active in 4-H, enjoyed livestock projects, and was on a nationally recognized livestock judging team.
Wayne graduated from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri, in 1995 with an Aviation Business Administration Degree. After college he moved to Maywood and became involved in the family farming and purebred cattle business in Maywood and Farnam where he established his own herd of purebred Angus and Charolais cattle.
He was well known for his mischievous smile and sense of humor. Wayne had an uncanny sense of getting right to the point. He had a special way with animals and enjoyed all kinds. He also liked everything that had horsepower. Wayne liked riding his Harley and being free, as well as all types of firearms. We will always remember that Wayne was the same happy person every day with a heart of gold and lots of patience.
Wayne was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Eustis, Nebraska; a life member of the American Angus Association, and the American Charolais Association; and a member of the pit crew on the Werkmeister Racing Team.
Survivors include his parents, John L. and Kay Schurr, of Farnam; two brothers, Marty and wife, Shelly Schurr, and their children, Adalyn and Gavon Schurr, all of Maywood, and Ryan and wife, Kari Schurr, of Farnam; his love, Sarah Prochaska, of Maywood; grandmother, Estella A. Tillotson, of Gothenburg; aunts and uncles, Jerry and wife, Linda Schurr, of Farnam, Janet and husband, John Speck, of St. Paul, Nebraska, Dean and wife, Marcia Schultheiss, of Orange, California, Rose Ann and husband, Marvin Young, of Martinez, Georgia, Virginia and husband, Jerry Kasha, of Canton, Georgia, and Roedene Abel, of Sutherland, Nebraska; 20 first cousins; his former wife, Jennifer Werkmeister, of Maywood; lots of extended family, many, many friends; and Hank, the cow dog.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John J. Schurr, Herman and Grace Schultheiss; step grandfather, Leroy Tillotson; and uncle, Dell Schultheiss.
Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, at the Maywood High School Gymnasium with Pastor Russell E. Saltzman of Trinity Lutheran Church in Gothenburg officiating. Burial will be in the Maywood Cemetery, Maywood.
Visitation will be on Tuesday 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m. at Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore in North Platte.
