JENNINGS, Kansas -- Galen John Carper, 84, died Friday (Aug. 19, 2011), at his residence in Jennings, Kansas.
He was born June 9, 1927, at Jennings, to Judd E. and Clara Mae (Tacha) Carper. He was raised in Jennings and graduated from Jennings High School in 1945.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
On Sept. 13, 1970, he married Mary "Merne" Karls in Oberlin, Kansas. After living in Denver, Colorado for 35 years, he returned to Jennings in 1992. He worked in a gas refinery.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Jennings American Legion and the Masonic Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Myra Bell Carper.
Survivors include his wife, Merne Carper of Jennings; two sons, Judd and wife, Kathy Carper of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Jeff and wife, Lisa Carper of Sarasota, Florida; two stepsons, Cecil and wife, Annette Bailey of Leoti and Tim and wife, Ann Bailey of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; one daughter, Teka Carper of Little Rock, Arkansas; four step-daughters, Charlene and husband, Danny Mangus of Kanorado, Kansas, Carol and husband, John Toptiff of Goodland, Kansas, Teresa and husband, Les Hospon of Bethune, Colorado and Tammy and husband, Beau Moody of Lawrence, Kansas; a brother, Charles and wife, Sandy Carper of Denver, Colorado; two grandchildren; 18 step-grandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Jennings Cemetery with James Jennings officiating.
There is no visitation.
