HERNDON, Kansas -- Eugene Walter Wurm, 82, died Saturday (July 2, 2011) at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska.

He was born Jan. 2, 1929, in Decatur County, Kansas, to Walter and Elsie (Humes) Wurm. He was raised on a farm in Logan Township in Decatur County. He received his education at Herndon High School. He served in the U.S. Army.

He marries Beverly Morris in June of 1956 in Oberlin, Kansas. He married Delores Carpenter in December of 1980 in Arapahoe, Nebraska. He married Bette Bean on Sept. 23, 2006 in Culbertson, Nebraska.

He always resided on a farm near Herndon, Kansas. He worked as a farmer, Decatur County appraiser and rural mail carrier.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Oberlin, the American Legion Adam Miller Post No. 133 in Culbertson, and the National Association of Retired Mail Carriers.

He was preceded in death by his parents; second wife, Dolores Wurm; and infant brother, Donald Wurm.

Survivors include his wife, Bette Wurm of Herndon; stepsons, Bill Hanke of Culbertson, John Sydow of Kearney, Dale and wife, Amanda Bean of Kearney, Lee and wife, Annie Carpenter of Australia, Scott and wife, Liz Carpenter of Wisconsin, and Ward and wife, Jill Carpenter of Arapahoe; four daughters, Judy Jordan of Oberlin, Patricia Buffum and husband, Dean Vavak of Omaha, Nebraska, Shanna and husband, Brad Long of Oberlin and Nancy and husband, Rick Corder of Lake Havasu, Arizona; stepdaughter, Gail and husband Larry Bass of McCook, Nebraska; brother, Lester and wife, Kay Wurm of Overland Park, Kansas; sisters, Wilma May of Oberlin and Neta and husband, Allen Jeffus of Topeka, Kansas; 30 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are Thursday, 10 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Oberlin with the Rev. Bradley Rick officiating. Interment is in St. John's Cemetery in rural Oberlin.

Visitation is Wednesday, 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., with family present from 6:30-8 p.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin and Thursday 8 a.m. until the service at the church.
