OBERLIN, Kansas -- Aleen P. Van Vleet, 100, died Monday (June 27, 2011) in Oberlin.
She was born Oct. 21, 1910, in Decatur County, Kansas, to Walter and Edith (Harris) Vernon. She was raised in the Oberlin community. She received her education at Decatur Community High School, graduating in 1928.
She married Leo F. Van Vleet Sr. on May 4, 1928. They lived in Oberlin.
She worked as the Decatur County Clerk and County Treasurer, and originated and operated the Golden Age Center for 20 years.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Oberlin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo; five brothers, Orval, Darrel, E. Max, Karl and Jay Vernon; and four sisters, Fausta Nicodemus, Mary Bethel, Nila Brunk and Janette Drotts.
Survivors include her sons, Leo F. Van Vleet Jr. and wife, Josephine of Phoenix, Arizona, and Eugene Van Vleet and wife, Lily of San Diego, California; daughter, Veanna Carman and husband, Max of Oberlin; brother, Chester Vernon and wife, Minnie of Roseville, California; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are Friday, 10:30 a.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with the Rev. Tom Smith officiating. Interment is in Oberlin Cemetery.
Visitation is Thursday, 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., and Friday 8 a.m. until the time of the service at Pauls Funeral Home.
