HERNDON, Kansas -- Edith Lydia Kompus Pettera, 99, died Saturday (June 11, 2011) at Cedar Living Center in Oberlin, Kansas.

She was born Oct. 29, 1911, near Herndon, Kansas, to Joseph and Lena (Toth) Kompus. She attended grade school at Walsh School in Elk Township, Kansas, and graduated from high school in Herndon in 1930.

On July 1, 1930 she married Joseph F. Pettera. To this union two sons were born.

She was a farmer's wife and homemaker. In the early 1940s, she worked two years for a women's garment factory in South Bend, Indiana. In Herndon, she was a member of the Christian Mothers Altar Society and the Richland Club. She cooked at the Herndon High School for 25 and a half years, and was a cancer crusader for 19 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Pettera; her parents; three sisters, Alice, Agnes and Helen; two grandsons, D.J. and Tony Pettera; and daughter-in-law, Rose Marie Pettera.

Survivors include her two sons, Don Pettera of Mesa, Arizona, and Les and wife, Myrna Pettera of Loveland, Colorado; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are Friday, 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Assumption Catholic Church in Herndon. Interment is in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Rosary is Friday, 10 a.m., at the church.

Visitation is Friday, 9-10 a.m., at the church.

A memorial has been established in her name to be designated at a later date.
