TRENTON, Nebraska -- Carl Alfred Lewis, 81, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2011, at the Community Hospital in McCook.

Carl was born in Trenton, Nebraska on June 3, 1929. He was the youngest son of six children born to Earl Franklin and Mille Elizabeth (Jackson) Lewis. Carl spent most of his life in Trenton. He graduated from Trenton High School.

When Carl graduated, he started working as a track laborer for the Burlington Northern Railroad. He retired in May of 1992.

He gave his heart to the Lord at the age of six and had been a faithful member of the Church of God.

Carl was united in marriage to Veda Maye Cole on May 27, 1955, at the Church of God by pastor Earl Osnes. To this union four children were born; Roger, Linda, Ronald and Kevin.

Carl and Veda celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 27, 2005.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ray L. Lewis, Oliver E. Lewis, Ralph Lewis and wife, Betty; two sisters, Opal Miller and husband, William and Florence Ripenburg and husband, Neil.

Carl is survived by his wife, Veda Lewis of Trenton; one daughter, Linda Kayleen Schmitz and husband, Craig of Trenton; sons, Roger Duane Lewis of Trenton, Ronald Eugene Lewis of Trenton and Kevin Ray Lewis and wife, Ashley of Hayes Center, Nebraska; six grandchildren, Brin Lewis, Jarrod Draper, Andrea Lewis and friend Kyle Parrish, Riley Lewis, Kollin Lewis and Kyler Lewis; three step-grandchildren, Tracy Rollins, Preston Schmitz and wife, Cathy, Gabrielle Crumpley and husband, Kary; and six step-great-grandchildren, Noah Carmichael, Dannie Turner, Justin Cameron, Garrett Schmitz and William and Wade Crumpley.

Funeral services are Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., at the Church of God in Trenton with Pastor Tim Roberts and Rev. Johnny Walker officiating. Interment is in the Cornell Cemetery in Trenton.

Visitation is today and Tuesday at Herrmann Funeral Home in Trenton from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Memorial may be given in his name and left at the funeral home.
