May 14: A good day to give your stuff away?

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

We're pushing the season somewhat -- OK, a lot -- but on days like these, it's hard not to think about spring and all it brings.

For those addicted to "garage sailing," that means spending Saturday mornings, Gazette classified ads in hand, prowling the alleys and porches of our communities, looking for hidden bargains.

Most of us have things we need to get rid of, but not all of us have the energy it takes to put on a successful garage sale.

For those, someone named Mike Monroe wants to establish a twice-a-year event called "Give Your Stuff Away Day."

According to his Facebook page, he's targeting May 14 as the first event, an effort to "help millions, while diminishing landfills, lowering costs and helping the economy.

"Many of us own valuable stuff we don't want anymore," he writes, "but instead of donating or selling it, we allow it to clutter our lives. Billions of our great items are wasting away. In one weekend, let's take all this stuff and make it available to others, instantly creating the world's biggest giveaway event!

"On May 14, simply bring your unwanted stuff to the curb. Guidelines: No trash, recyclables, food, drugs, chemicals or illegal/dangerous items. Just safe, valuable items you would like to give to others."

We have to admit, it's an intriguing idea. Yes, it would be better for most of us to have a garage sale and put the money to good use, or donate the money or items to charity.

But if all we have the energy for is to drag our stuff to the curb, we'd be better for the effort.
