HASTINGS, Nebraska -- Varnum "Barney" W. Millard, 92, passed away Tuesday (Dec. 14, 2010), at Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare in Hastings.
Varnum was born Oct. 16, 1918, in Hastings to Benjamine Franklin and Francis E. (Munden) Millard. He graduated from Hastings High School.
On Feb. 6, 1953, he married Velma Nelson in McCook, Nebraska. Velma preceded him in death on June 15, 2009.
Varnum served in the U.S. Army from 1943-46. He worked as a cook; owned two bowling alleys; and managed Morris Paint in Grand Island, Nebraska. He also worked as a greeter at Wal-Mart during his retirement.
Varnum was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Velma Millard; one sister; and one brother.
He is Survived by daughter, Vicki and husband, Leon Kyle of Hastings; son, Rick Millard and significant other, Tracy Smalley of Clay Center, Nebraska; grandchildren, Troy and wife, Pixie Kyle of St. Paul, Nebraska, Kimberly and husband, Rick Schroeder of Hastings, April Salazar of California, Cody Millard of Hastings, Tyler Millard of Hastings, Ashley Millard of Lincoln, Nebraska, 32 great-grandchildren; sister, Vervie Aman; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services are Monday (Dec. 20, 2010), 10:30 a.m., at Butler Volland Chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Lee R. Wigert officiating. Burial with military rites is in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings.
There is no visitation.
Book signing is Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the funeral home.
