OBERLIN, Kansas -- Phyllis V. McCartney, 89, died Dec. 5, 2010, in Topeka, Kansas.

She was born Dec. 2, 1921, to Harry E. and Hattie F (Bliss) Armstrong in Decatur County, Kansas. She was raised on a farm northwest of Oberlin. She graduated from Decatur Community High School in 1940.

On April 24, 1943, she married Byron E. McCartney in Montgomery, Alabama. She was a beautician. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a son, Evan McCartney.

She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn and husband, Howard Kuhn of Topeka; two sisters, Avis and husband, Melvin Beneda of Holton, Kansas and Frances and husband, Charles Rucker of Lee's Summit, Missouri; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are Friday, 2:30 p.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with the Rev. Linda Willey officiating. Interment is in the Oberlin Cemetery.

Visitation is at the funeral home on Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday 8 a.m. until the service.
