A good start to the holiday season
Thursday, December 2, 2010
If the cold weather and just-enough snow isn't enough to let us know Christmas is coming, then this weekend's events should do the job.
They start tonight with the McCook Community College Theater production of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," adapted by Lynn Stevens, at 7:30 p.m. in the historic Fox Theatre in downtown McCook. Even Scrooge would consider tickets to the timeless tale of selfishness and redemption a bargain at $5 each, available at Schmick's Market, the MCC Welcome Center or at the door. If you can't make it tonight, it will be on again Friday and Saturday nights at the same time.
Sunday's McCook Area Community Chorus concert at 4 p.m. will be complete with a prelude by harpist Robin Marks and special guests the Central Starz, with a soup supper to follow, all for a free will donation.
If you hurry, you could even proceed from there to a performance by the Oberlin Area Concert Band, set for the Gateway Center, 7:30 p.m. Sunday night. Sponsored by the Oberrlin Arts and Humanities Commission, the event is open to season ticket holders or $10 for adults, $5 for students grades 1-12.
Of course, that's only a tiny sampling of a month packed full of holiday activities in schools, churches and businesses. Watch these pages for more details as they become available, or check out the community calendar on our website, mccookgazette.com.
Here's to good start to a happy holiday season for all.
