McCook girls tough on home course

The home-course advantage was big for the McCook High School girls Friday, Aug. 27.

The Bison girls ran away with the team championship in the McCook Invitational golf tournament. The hosts broke a team scoring record with their winning total of 357 strokes. Ogallala was a distant second with 424 strokes. Dundy County-Stratton was sixth at 494.

Competitors played the front nine holes twice Friday at Heritage Hills.

The hosts placed five girls in the top nine in the final individual standings, led by senior Shelby Allen. Allen won first place with rounds of 39 and 47 for an 18-hole total of 86 strokes. Teammate Megan Vetrovsky, a freshman, finished second with rounds of 44 and 45 for an 89 total, and McCook sophomore Kaylee Samway was third with a 90 after shooting rounds of 45 and 45.

Megan Rokusek placed fifth with a 92 after rounds of 45 and 47, and Taylor Hansen was ninth with a 101 after rounds of 51 and 50.

"I've always maintained that if you can break a hundred on this course you're starting to become a player," said McCook golf coach Randy Ryser. "If we go 86, 89, 90, 92, that was Shelby Allen, Megan Vetrovsky, Kaylee Samway and Megan Rokusek, those are really good scores at Heritage Hills, or any place. I'm sure tickled for them."

McCook had two other competitors in Friday's meet. Jacqui Hager had a 58-53 -- 111, and Brianna Redl shot 67-57 -- 124.

Dundy County-Stratton was led by Amanda Calvert and Brianne Shillington with 109 each.

The McCook girls return to action Friday, Sept. 3, at the North Platte Invitational at the Iron Eagle Golf Course starting at 9 a.m.
