Harold J. Schaefers

BEAVER CITY, Nebraska -- Harold J. Schaefers, 95, died Monday (June 14, 2010) at the Beaver City Manor.
He was born May 29, 1915, at Clayton, Iowa to Xavier and Mary (Auer) Schaefers. He was the youngest of 6 children. He grew up in Iowa and helped his father with farming until he met and married Venita Carpenter in Strawberry Point, Iowa on Sept. 6, 1939.
Shortly after marriage the couple moved to California where he was a pipe fitter (welder) in the Los Angeles and Long Beach area. In the mid-40s they moved to Cogwell, North Dakota where they opened Schaefers Blacksmith & Repair.
In 1961, they relocated to Berthoud, Colorado and opened Schaefer's Repair where they continued to operate until his wife died on Jan. 28, 1975, at which time he moved to Beaver City, Nebraska and opened Schaefers Repair Shop, operating it until retirement in 2004. He moved to the Beaver City Manor in February of 2010.
He was a member of St. Germanus Catholic Church in Arapahoe, Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; two brothers, George and Casper Schaefers; three sisters, Marie Magennis, Margret Mededith, and Teresa Willie.
Survivors include one son, Elmer and wife, Susie Schaefers of Beaver City; brother-in-law, Bernie Carpenter and wife, Jan of California; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass will be Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Germanus Catholic Church in Arapahoe with the Rev. Robert Barnhill, officiating. A cremation to follow services with private inurnment at Mount Hope Cemetery in Beaver City. A Rosary services will be before Mass at 1:30 p.m.
Viewing and visitation will be Sunday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Wenburg Funeral Home in Beaver City and prior to services Monday at the church in Arapahoe.
