CHAMPION -- Douglas Win Chambers, 64, died Tuesday (March 16, 2010) at the Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial after a fierce battle with diabetes and cancer.

He was born Aug. 11, 1945, at the Imperial Community Hospital, the fourth of 11 children born to Montecalm A. and Faye M. (Smith) Chambers. He grew up on the family farm south of Champion, attending school at the Champion Grade School and graduating from Chase County High School in Imperial in 1963. He attended McCook Community College, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and San Mateo College in San Mateo, Calif.

Doug worked many years for United Airlines, before purchasing a bar in Englewood, Colo., where he met his wife Shannon Owings. In 1987 he moved to Champion and was employed at Artistic Woodworking until his retirement in May 2008.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Montecalm and Faye; sister, Brenda; brothers, Sheridan "Chub" and Tim.

Survivors include his wife, Shannon of twenty-six years; daughter Darby and husband, Ario of Imperial; son, Justin of Austin, Texas; brother Mitch and wife, Janet of Rio Linda, Calif.; sisters, Winona Kaye of Benkelman, Sandra Brunkhorst of Trenton, Kathy Samuelson of Lincoln, Monte Rae Graves of Champion, Janie Mullanix and husband, Dan of Champion and Candy Schilke and husband, Dave of Imperial; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Friday, 10:30 a.m., at the Champion Community Center with interment following at Lakeview Cemetery in Champion.

A memorial has been established in his name.
