Area teams lose at girls state tournament

LINCOLN -- Both Gazette area teams competing in the 2010 Nebraska State High School Girls Basketball Championships lost first-round games Thursday, March 4, to end their respective seasons.

Hitchcock County dropped a 50-40 decision to undefeated Wynot in Class D-2 action Thursday night at the Lincoln North Star High School gym. Southern Valley bowed out of the C-1 state tournament with a 65-41 loss to Wahoo Thursday afternoon at Pershing Auditorium.

Hitchcock County led 23-22 at halftime, but the Falcons managed just three points in the third quarter to fall behind 32-36 at the quarter break. Wynot led by as many as 18 points in the final period before Hitchcock County pulled within eight points before the Blue Devils sealed the win.

Laramey Lewis led the Falcons with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Hitchcock County ends the season with a 20-6 record. Wynot, 24-0, advances to the D-2 semifinals Friday evening against Chambers, a 68-51 winner over S-E-M in other first-round action Thursday.

Southern Valley falls

Wahoo pulled away from Southern Valley in the second quarter in first-round C-1 state tournament action Thursday.

The Warriors led 14-5 after one quarter, then outscored the Eagles 20-12 in the second period to build a 34-17 cushion.

Wahoo scored the first 14 points of the third period to stretch the lead to 48-17.

Jessica Murdock led Southern Valley with 14 points.

Southern Valley ends the year with a 19-4 record.

Wahoo defeated Lutheran High Northeast, 52-49, in Friday morning semifinals. The Warriors advance to the C-1 state championship finals Saturday morning. Wahoo will face cross-town rival Bishop Neumann Saturday for the C-1 state championship.

Rawlins County ousted in

Kansas 2A Sub-State Tourney

WAKEENEY, Kan. -- Rawlins County's girls lost a 53-44 decision to Hill City in the Kansas Class 2A Sub-State Basketball Tournament semifinals Thursday, MArch 4.

Tae sub-state tournament is being played at Trego Community High School in Wakeeney.

Hill City ran away from the Buffaloes in the first half, with a 16-8 lead after one quarter and a 41-23 advantage at intermission.

Hillary Chvatal had a huge game for Rawlins County with 29 points. Chvatal made 13 of 20 field goals for 65 percent, plus 3 of 4 free throws. Hillary had 16 rebounds. Jordan Mizer added 13 points and 9 rebounds for the Buffaloes.

Hill City's girls advance to the sub-state tournament finals Saturday against Ellis, Kan. Rawlins County ends the season with a 12-10 record.

The Buffaloes advanced to the semifinals with a 53-32 first-round win at home over LaCrosse last Monday.

Area teams defeated

Rawlins County's boys lost a 64-56 decision at Oakley to end their season last Tuesday in the 2A sub-state tournament.

The Buffaloes finished with a 7-14 record.

The Decatur Community boys and girls ended their seasons in the first-round of the Wakeeney 2A sub-state tournament.

The Oberlin, Kan, girls team lost at Oakley, 49-30, in first-round action Monday, March 1. The Decatur Community girls end the season with a 5-16 record.

The Oberlin boys finished the year with a 1-20 record after a 54-33 loss at Hill City Tuesday, March 2.
