LaVerne S. 'Dick' Shaffer

TRENTON -- LaVerne Stanley "Dick" Shaffer, 94, died Thursday (Jan. 7, 2009), at his home in Trenton.

He was born Sept. 30, 1915, at Atwood, Kan., the son of Fred P. and Freda E. (Andorka) Shaffer. He grew up in Hitchcock County, where he graduated from rural school and attended Trenton High School.

On Jan. 9, 1947, he married Hilda Nyp at Clovis, N.M., and resided at Trenton where Hilda operated the Soo Paw Cafe for 33 years. He was a truck driver for Alt Oil Company and worked on the construction of the Trenton Dam for 10 years. He also worked for Youngson Trucking for 18 years before retiring in 1986.

He is survived by one son, Merlin Shaffer and former daughter-in-law Rita Shaffer, both of Trenton and two sisters.

Cremation was his choice and no services are planned.
