Charley Brown doubles up at Lincoln County Raceway

Monday, May 25, 2009

NORTH PLATTE -- While most of North Platte was soaked by rain showers during the day Saturday, Lincoln County Raceway received enough rain to keep the dust down in the pits and the track.

Nearly 90 cars were crammed into the pits for the big night of racing. Charley Brown of Maxwell, Dillon Thompson of Campbell and Austin Farley of Brighton, Colo. crammed their right feet into the accelerators of their cars and took the A Feature wins.

At times, it appeared everyone wanted to win the IMCA Modified A Feature and at times, it looked like no one was going to be left at the end. Jay Steffens took the lead from fellow North Platte driver Josh Sabin on lap two and managed to keep out of harm's way through a couple of caution periods.

Unfortunately for him, he was the next caution, as he spun in front of the field coming out of corner four trying to complete lap four. Despite starting in row six, Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo. inherited the lead, only to be overtaken by fifth row starter Charley Brown on lap eight.

After the sixth caution on lap thirteen, the field was told the next caution would mean the end of the race. B Feature winner Nick Tubbs of Colby, Kan. took a chance and briefly got by Brown on the restart.

Brown was able to get back by the completion on lap 14. Tubbs lost control of his car on the next night and as promised, the race was ended. John Huffman of McCook was credited with second place.

Sabin andrew Dillenburg of North Platte and David Murray of Oberlin, Kan. were the heat race winners.

The IMCA Stock Car class had a rough time getting the first lap run and many cars near the front were involved in the trouble. Because of that, B Feature winner Mikey Dancer of North Platte went from row seven to the third row when the race finally got underway.

Dancer took the lead on lap two, with his sights set on winning both Stock Car features. On the thirteenth lap, while having a decent lead over Charley Brown, Dancer's car died and coasted to the infield.

Brown was joined at the front by Todd Chrisman of North Platte. Chrisman was able to get his car along the side of Brown's, which gave the Maxwell driver a wakeup call.

Brown put some distance between he and Todd and took the Stock Car to victory, giving him two A Feature wins in two different classes for the night. Chrisman was followed by Colton Osborn of Cozad, Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood and Kerry Jones of North Platte. The three heat races were won by Brown, Osborn and Jeremy Halouska of North Platte.

Twenty-four IMCA Hobby Stocks came to race, many because of the night being a Burger King Nine For Nine Challenge Series race. Heat winner Jim Buss of Blue Hill started on the front row and paced the early portion of the race.

At the halfway point, Dillon Thompson of Campbell had worked his way from row six to the lead. While the action throughout the field was hot and heavy, Thompson was able to pull away for his first Lincoln County Raceway win.

Buss finished in second place, but did not stop in the claim area after the race. That moved Kyle Bond of Gibbon up to second place, Greg Hoing of Johnson Lake into third, heat winner Corey Cruzan of Maxell into fourth place and Benkelman's Austin Davis fifth. Dan Morash of North Platte was the B Feature winner. Leland Stute of Benkelman was the other heat race winner.

Austin Farley was put to the back of the seventeen car field of the Mini-Sprint A Feature after officials thought he jumped the gun.

He might have been moving just that fast, as by lap six, without the aid of a caution, he had the lead. For awhile, it looked as though he would finish the caution-free twenty lap race uncontested, but lapped traffic made him whoa down and his brother Andy caught him.

With a couple of laps to go, fourteen year old Andy nearly snuck ahead of fifteen year old Austin when he was behind a slower car.

However, that was the moment Austin saw an opening, took it and completed the heat race-feature sweep.

Andy Farley, the other Mini-Sprint heat winner, was followed at the line by Lyndon Bolt of Rapid City, S.D., Jake Lipker of Harvard and Josh Lipker of Cozad.

The next race at Lincoln County Raceway will be Saturday night, May 30. The gates will open at 5 p.m. and the races will start at 7 p.m.
