OGALLALA -- The McCook High School boys golf team earned a berth in the Nebraska Class B state tournament with a third-place showing at the Class B-4 district tournament Monday at Ogallala's West Wind Course.
McCook will be making its first trip to state as a team since 2006. The Bison placed second at state in 2006.
McCook fired a 328 score, led by senior Joe Vetrovsky, who fired a 77 and tied for fourth place and ended up sixth in a card playoff.
"The Bison did a fantastic job as a team to qualify for state," said McCook boys golf coach Rick Haney. "We have been working for a top three finish at the district meet all season. It was good to see the players come through and play some decent golf to qualify.
"Joe Vetrovsky had a very good day shooting a 77. He scored a 40 on the front nine and then followed it up with a 37 on the back to get the 77. Alex Garcia has proved to be Mr. Steady this year. He is consistantly around the 80 mark and I as a coach value his contributions and consistancy.
"Adam Kruger followed with an 84. He opened up with a 40 on the first nine and held on with a 44 to finish the back. His 84 is nice to see. He has been working really hard and his efforts are beginning to pay off.
"Ben Vetrovsky was the fourth score that was applied to the team score. He shot a 86. His front and back nines were identical with both being 43's. I know that Ben has the potential to shoot in the 70's and feel that it is right around the corner for him.
"Bryce Buhr was the final competitor for the Bison. Bryce shot a very good front nine scoring a 40. If a guy could remove two holes off the back his score would have been great. He played 16 very good holes and found trouble on two. He is one who again has a lot of potential to shoot in the 70's."
The Class B state tournament will be played May 27-28 at the Holmes Golf Course in Lincoln.

Kansas Class 2A Regional at Smith Center -- Two Decatur Community High School-Oberlin golfers placed in the top 10 at the Kansas Class 2A regional Monday at Smith Center Country Club.
Oberlin's Jordan Tally and Garrett Berry earned the eight-place and ninth-place medals at the regional tournament.
Tally fired an 89 and Berry recorded a 90.
Nathan Simonsson shot 98, Chris Larson 110 and Jacob Larue 113.
The Oberlin golf team posted a 387 score and placed fourth.
The top three teams qualified for the Kansas Class 2A state tournament May 27 at the Salina Municipal Course.
Republic County-Belleville won the regional title with a 353 score, followed by Trego Community-WaKeeney 356 and Smith Center 380.
"The weather was very hot and windy, which meant high scores," said Oberlin coach Dick Ahlberg.
"Our team has shown great improvement this season. This was kind of a tough loss. We let this regional get away from us in the back nine.
"Qualifying for the state meet is nice reward for Jordan. He has had a good senior season. It was a good accomplishment for Garrett in his freshman season."
