Novella Ann Hewett

BEAVER CITY -- Novella Ann Hewett, 94, of Beaver City, died Monday (April 6, 2009) at Harlan County Hospital at Alma.
She was born July 29, 1914, at Deer Trail, Colo., to James and Grace (Booth) Nichol. The family moved to a farm near Logan, Kan., in 1916. She grew up in Bow Creek Community, graduating from Densmore, Kan., High School in 1933.
She married Loren Hewett on Nov. 8, 1933, in Logan. They farmed in the Cactus Community until they purchased a farm east of Beaver City. They continued to farm until 1972, when they moved into Beaver City. She worked for 25 years in the public at Harringtons, Maaskes, Fitz's and Kelley's Market and then the Beaver City Manor. She retired in 1983. Her husband died Feb, 25,1990. She also wrote news for the Beaver City Times Tribune for a number of years.
She was a very active member of Hollinger United Methodist Church, taught Sunday School and was the Sunday School Superintendent for a number of years. She was president of the United Methodist Women and worked at the blood mobile for a number of years as a volunteer. She was an active member of Beaver City Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Loren, nephew, Michael Nichol and brother, Leslie Nichol.
Survivors include her daughter, Judy and husband, Jerry Smith of Joplin, Mo.; brother, Orville Nichol and wife, Dorothy of Sweet Home, Ore.; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m., at Hollinger United Methodist Church at Hollinger with the Revs. Linda Knipping and Jane Blum officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery near Hollinger.
Viewing and visitation will be Thursday 9 a.m. - 8 p.m., at Wenburg Funeral Home in Beaver City and prior to services on Friday at the church. Condolences or personal reflections can be left at www.wenburgfuneralhome.com.
