Hastings baseball team splits with CCU

KEARNEY -- Freshman Jacob Hiatt threw seven scoreless innings and the Nebraska-Kearney baseball team pounded out 18 hits in a 15-6 win over Colorado Christian in the first game of a double header Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.

The Cougars (10-17, 4-12 RMAC) managed to salvage the last game of the series as senior lefty Nick Leader tossed a six hit complete game shutout to lead CCU to a 9-0 win.

After winning three of four games this weekend, UNK is now 10-16 (8-8 RMAC) on the year.

In his second collegiate start, Hiatt (Lincoln North Star) pretty much handcuffed the Cougars all game long. Allowing just four hits and walking only one, he fanned five to earn his second win as a Loper.

Hiatt got all the support he needed early on as UNK scored two in the first, three in the third and then tallied four runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Ten different Lopers had a hit with junior third baseman Blake Cover (3 for 6), sophomore DH Mike Stamp (3 for 4, two runs) and sophomore second baseman Daren Grace (2 for 3) each scoring twice and knocking in two runs.

Finally, senior outfielder Nate Swearer hit his fourth homer of the week, a two-run shot in the seventh to highlight a 3 for 5, four RBI game.

UNK needed to save some of those hits and runs in the series finale as Leader improved to 3-3 by allowing just six hits and three walks in seven full innings.

Five Lopers reached base over the first two innings but Leader picked three of them off first base to keep UNK scoreless.

Christian then scored five runs, all unearned, after two were out in the second. Designated hitter Mike Cavazos (1 for 2) had a two run single to highlight the big inning.

The Cougars kept UNK at bay by scoring four more unearned runs, three coming in the fifth and one more in the seventh.

For the Lopers, Swearer and junior short stop Brandon Buchanan each went 2 for 3 with junior Ryan Seefus not allowing an earned run in three innings of relief.

UNK will host Hastings College Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in a single nine-inning game.
