HAYES CENTER -- Jerry Filmore Potter, 63, of Trenton, Neb., died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

He was born March 8, 1945 in McCook, the son of the late Victor Joy and Cleo Marna (Cross) Potter. He was the middle son of three boys. Jerry spent his early years on a farm west of Hayes Center. He graduated from Hayes Center High School in 1963 with all-state football honors and academic distinction receiving a Regent's scholarship. He attended college for a short time and returned to Hayes Center to farm with his father.

Jerry served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He spent most of his life farming and ranching in Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, working hard, hunting and being outside.

Jerry is survived by his two daughters, Lisa Ann Yost and her husband, Brian of Blair, Neb., and Julie Dawn Smith and her husband, Jeff of Albuquerque, N.M.; five grandchildren, Connor Jack Yost, Ian Charles Yost, Will Charles Yost, Samuel Matthew Smith and Madison Joy Smith; his brothers, Victor E. Potter and his wife, Cheryl of Hill City, Kan., and Dexter A. Potter and his wife, Claudia of Hill City Kan.; also many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

There is no visitation.

A memorial service will be Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009 at 2 p.m., at Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Hayes Center, Nebraska with Pastors Fay Ann Blaylock and Jean Miller officiating. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name in care of AmFirst Bank in Hayes Center.
