WEC work crews could return to schools

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

A bill that allows work crews from the Nebraska Department of Corrections Work Ethic Camp in McCook provide labor at educational facilities will be the subject of hearing on Thursday, 1:30 p.m. in the Judiciary Committee of the Nebraska Legislature.

The bill, LB 429, was introduced by Sen. Mark Christensen of Imperial.

Offenders/inmates from the Work Ethic Camp were providing labor for area schools until it was discovered in late 2008 that it was not allowed per state statute.

"The Work Ethic Camp provided a tremendous amount of man hours to school systems. They've been invaluable," said ESU 15 administrator Brent McMurtrey. "I invite all superintendents and others to attend the hearing and voice their support of this bill."

ESU 15 covers six counties and nine school districts in Southwest Nebraska.

  • I think that the work crews from WEC should be allowed to do the work at the schools They have helped many school districts save money on jobs that otherwise might not have been possible.
