MCC men 0-2 at Region IX Shootout

NORTH PLATTE -- The McCook Community College men's basketball team went 0-2 at the Region IX Shootout Friday and Saturday.

The tournament was hosted by North Platte Community College.

The MCC Indians lost to Lamar (Colo.) Community College 74-53 Friday and 65-56 to Otero Junior College (La Junta, Colo.) on Saturday.

Javoun Martin led MCC in scoring in the Lamar game with 16 points, including three 3-pointers. Marcus Landry added 10 points and pulled down 7 rebounds.

Trey Mosby scored 8 points, Deshawn Howard 6, John Hill 4, Ralph Foster 3, Ronnell Grant 2, Ray Robinson 2 and Keenan Gaskin 2.

Howard and Grant each grabbed 6 rebounds. Grant had 2 assists. Mosby had 3 steals.

McCook High School alum Eric Rippen, a 5-foot-9 freshman guard, played 12 minutes for the Indians. He missed his only shot -- a 3-point attempt.

McCook made 21-of-52 field goals, including 3-of-13 3-pointers, and 8-of-21 free throws. The Indians were outrebounded 28-22.

Four Lopers scored in double figures, led by Scott Day with 16 points. P.J. Reyes and Marc Anthony Franks each scored 14 points and Ogo Adgoye 13.

Franks grabbed 9 rebounds, Day 5 and Jamal Edwards 5. Reyes had 2 assists. Adgoye blocked 1 shot. Reyes had 4 steals, Edwards 2 and Franks 2.

The Lopers made 27-of-54 field goals, including 4-of-9 3-pointers, and 16-of-25 free throws.

Martin also led the Indians in scoring in the loss to the Otero Rattlers with 10 points. Landry scored 9, Landry 8, Hill 7, Alonzo Louis 6, Mosby 4, Grant 2 and Justin Patton 2.

Mosby canned a pair of 3-pointers and Hill 1. Landy grabbed 7 rebounds, Louis 4, Grant 4 and Robinson 4. Grant and Landry each had 1 assist. Landry blocked 2 shots. Grant had 2 steals, Howard 1 and Robinson 1.

MCC made 24-of-60 field goals, including 3-of-13 3-pointers, and 5-of-11 free throws. MCC outrebounded Otero 31-29.

Glen Davis led Otero with 14 points, followed by Joey Stukes 12, Yuki Yamaguch 10 and Daniel Steffenson 9. Stukes made the team's lone 3-pointer.

Daniel Pierre had 5 points and 7 rebounds. Yamaguchi had 5 boards.

Steffenson had 1 assist. Steffenson had 2 steals, Stukes 1 and Davis 1.

Otero made 24-of-57 field goals, including 1-of-12 3-pointers, and 16-of-20 field goals.

MCC led Otero 31-29 at halftime, but was outscored 36-25 in the second half.

The Indians play road games at Hastings College Junior Varsity Wednesday (8 p.m.) and Southeast Community College-Beatrice Saturday (4 p.m.).

The MCC women play Southeast at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The MCC women and men play at North Platte Community College at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 21.

The Indian teams play their first home games of the second semester against Eastern Wyoming Jan. 24.
