Restoring service

Bruce Crosby/McCook Daily Gazette

Qwest crews work to repair a large telephone line that was cut through by a contractor installing a water line on West O Street in McCook on Thursday. The cable carried 900 pairs of copper wires, serving about 660 customers around the McCook area. The cut was reported at 1 p.m. and service was restored at 10 p.m. Thursday. Commercial contractors, private individuals and anyone else planning to dig is urged to call the Diggers Hotline at 811 a few days before work begins so underground utilities can be located in time to avoid damage.

  • I believe that digging a hole without calling diggers hotline is illegal. Were the lines not located properly or did the contractor fail to call diggers hotline?

  • contractor failed to call diggers because he was in a hurry and didn't want to wait. Now he's blamming Qwest for not burrying the line deep enough!

  • Oh my!! Looks like another business gone down the tubes because of not checking or doing the right thing. This guy will have to pay for it all. Like others said, you have to call Diggers Hotline before digging. It is a free call and the service is free. Guess the guy don't know what the word "FREE" stands for.
