Cards pound Potter-Dix

The Cardinals will host Sumner-Eddyville-Miller in the first round of Class D2 state football playoffs at 6 p.m. Thursday.

HAYES CENTER -- The Hayes Center Cardinals football team scored 68 points in the first half to pound Potter-Dix 74-13 Friday night.

The Cardinals racked up 380 yards total offense and allowed Potter-Dix 115 yards.

"Tonight's district championship win was another total team effort," said coach Scott Jorgensen.

"I felt we executed very well on both sides of the ball. We need to keep building on the momentum that we have established during the regular season into the playoffs. I know the boys are up to the challenges that await us in the playoffs."

Hayes Center running back Keifer Messersmith led the Cardinals with 13 carries for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Brian Christner ran for 88 yards on 7 carries and 3 touchdowns.

Tyler Clifford led the defense with 11 total stops 5 solo. Matt Gohl had 9 tackles 5 solo.

The number 4 seed Cardinals finished the season with a 8-0 record and will host the number 13 seed Sumner-Eddyville-Miller (4-4) in class D-2 playoffs Thursday.

ST. FRANCIS -- Kansas teams will play their final regular-season games Thursday and Friday.

St. Francis (7-1) and Rawlins County-Atwood (5-3) play Thursday at St. Francis.

St. Francis blasted Wichita County-Leoti 68-32 and Rawlins County ripped Syracuse 58-25 Friday night.

St. Francis rushed for 386 yards on 68 carries against Wichita County and had three runners go over 100 yards -- Cody Sherlock 117, Trevor Hilt 109 and Trent Raile 105.

Jesse Pacheco caught 3 passes for 40 yards and Trent Raile 1 for 28. Matt Raile completed 4-of-5 passes for 68 yards.

Hilt scored 4 touchdowns, Trent Raile 3. Pacheco 1 and Sherlock 1.

Trent Kinen made 13 tackles, Sherlock 11. Trent Raile 9 and Terrence Lamb 8. Casey House had 1 sack. Trent Raile, Matt Raile and Alex Long each had 1 interception.
