Southwest volleyball 5-0

SOUTHWEST -- The Southwest Roughrider volleyball team defeated Southern Valley 25-18, 25-23, 25-15 Thursday at the Southwest gymnasium and improved to 5-0.
Mariah Longnecker had 33 set assists and 2 service points for Southwest. Abby Houghtelling pounded 15 kills and added 6 digs, 5 blocks, 6 service points and 2 ace serves.
Megan Conway had 8 kills, 3 digs, 1 block, 6 points and 1 ace. Darcie Hayes served 12 points. Lesley Ruggles had 1 kill, four digs and 1 block. Jordan Brooks had 6 digs and 1 point. Candance Harris had 5 blocks. Brooke Ryan had 2 digs and 11 points. Candace Malleck had 9 kills.
"We played well except for our serving in several areas," said Southwest coach Dennis Troester. "Darcie Hayes and Abby Houghtelling were key servers. Brooke Ryan and Kimberlyn McConville were 17-for-17 in serving. Mariah Longnecker did a very good job of delivering the ball and all of our hitters were able to have a good night in hitting."
Jessica Murdoch had 8 kills and Alissa Brooks 4 for Southern Valley. Cassie Brooks had 14 set assists. Murdoch had 2 ace blocks. Alissa Brooks had 3 ace serves. Murdoch had 6 digs and Alissa Brooks 4.
The Southwest JV team downed Southern Valley's JV 25-21, 25-12 and the Southern Valley C team won 25-16, 16-25, 15-6.
Paige Quinn led the Southern Valley JV with 3 kills and Margi Lenneman added 1. Johanna Perkins had 3 ace serves and Paige Quinn 1. Sarah Culver had 4 set assists and Steph Medinger 1.
Sara Lenneman and Andre Hoffman had 2 kills each for the Southern Valley C team. Lenneman had 3 ace serves and Alisa Walker 2. Emily Carlson had 6 set assists.
Southwest and Cambridge compete in the Elm Creek Tournament Saturday.
Cambridge beats Overton -- The Cambridge volleyball team defeated Overton 25-23, 25-11, 25-23 Thursday night.
Traci Keyser led the Trojans in kills with 11. Frankie Petersen and Kellie Ballou each had 6. Chelsey Moyer had 8 digs, Petersen 6 and Ballou 6.
Petersen had 13 set assists and Dani Carpenter 7. Keyser had 4 service aces and Ballou 3. Jessica Lewis and Halee Long each had 1 ace block. Keyser had 10 service points and Carpenter 6.
"The girls did a good job of executing plays when or passes were on target," said Cambridge coach Judy Mousel. "We still have a lot of work to do on many facets of the game. Our serving, serve receive and defense needs to be more consistent to get our game where we want it to be. We have a lot of underclassmen playing some key roles for us this year. Our goal is to improve every game."
Maywood beats Maxwell -- The Maywood volleyball team needed five games to beat Maxwell Thursday night at Maxwell. The Tigers won 15-25, 18-25, 25-21, 25-19, 20-18.
Melody Norgaard served 10 points, Makayla Gardner 7 and Liz Snider 6. Gardner had 6 aces, Snider 4 and Norgaard 2.
Kadee Arensdorf had 13 set assists and Norgaard 12. Susan Koester and Arensdorf each had 9 kills and Gardner 8. Koester had 21 digs, Arensdorf 11 and Ashley Meritt 10.
"The girls started out losing -- we were down 0-2 and they found it within themselves to fight," said Maywood coach Shauna Donahue. "We had a lot of errors with serving but they were lucky enough to come out on top."
Perkins County beats Holyoke -- The Perkins County volleyball team defeated Holyoke, Colo., 25-17, 15-25, 25-22, 20-25, 18-16 Thursday at Grant.
Tanya Metcalf had 14 kills, Brooke Lee 11 and Jenni Sis 9. Shalee Pollard had 5 ace blocks, Lee 3 and Metcalf 3. Mackenzie Hite had 40 set assists. Sis had 9 ace serves and 25 digs. Jessica Day had 17 digs.
In other action, Paxton defeated Medicine Valley 25-8, 25-5, 25-13 and Wauneta-Palisade defeated St. Francis 25-15, 25-21, 25-19.
Chase County went 2-0 in the Wray, Colo. Triangular. The Longhorns defeated Wray 25-14, 25-21 and Haxtun, Colo., 25-10, 25-10.
