No. 10 Falcon boys slide by No. 3 Brewster
TRENTON -- In a cross-state battle of ranked teams Tuesday night at Trenton, Hitchcock County survived against Brewster 53-49.
Hitchcock County, ranked 10th in Nebraska Class D-1, improved to 11-2. Brewster, No. 3 in Kansas Class 1A, dropped to 9-2.
Hitchcock County bolted out to a 12-6 lead in the first quarter, but Brewster rallied to tie the score at 22-22 at halftime. The Falcons led 35-32 after three quarters.
"This was a big win against a ranked Kansas team," said Hitchcock County coach Mike Tines. "We played very good defense and knocked down clutch free throws in the fourth quarter. It was another good team effort."
Josh Kershaw led the Falcons with 19 points. Orrin Riggs added 9.
Three Brewster players scored in double figures, led by Jeff Reid with 19 points. Corey Siruta scored 13 and Andrew Sturns 11.
Hitchcock County plays at Paxton Saturday.

TRENTON -- The Brewster, Kan., girls basketball team handed the Hitchcock County Falcons a 63-45 loss Tuesday night at the Hitchcock County gym in Trenton.
Lexey Lewis led the host Falcons with 20 points, including 7-of-7 free throws. She also had 3 rebounds and 3 steals.
Megan Cole scored 9 points for Hitchcock County (2-10).
Lisa Faimon grabbed 5 rebounds and hit 6-of-7 free throws. Ashley Garner had 5 rebounds.
Avery Schultz led Brewster with 20 points.

Maywood 43
HAYES CENTER -- The Cardinals put up 49 points in the first half to pummel Maywood 71-43 Tuesday.
The game was a make up game that was scheduled last Dec. 29.
"We came out focused and really played well in the first half," said coach Louis Cuellar.
"We had a few mental breakdowns in the second half but that will happen with a young team.
"All in all, I was proud of the effort and Fridays game against Maxwell is going to be fun."
Jake Rowley led the Cardinals with 16 points and 7 rebounds.
Luke Clifford scored 10, Matt Gohl added 8 points and 8 steals.
Trent Whitman scored 17 points for Maywood.
Hayes Center will play Maxwell at home Friday.
Maywood will travel to Bertrand Friday.

HAYES CENTER -- The Maywood girls basketball team rallied, but fell short 52-50 to Hayes Center Tuesday.
"The girls came out and played consistently in the first three quarters of the game and did a great job," said Krystal Sauser.
"In the fourth quarter we let down and Maywood was able to get a pretty good run. The girls kept fighting and were able to hold them off."
Randi Steele put up 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Hayes Center. Jamie Lapp scored 13.
Maywood had three players in double figures with Susan Koester getting 15, Brooke Koester 11 and Celsie Contreras 10.
