Bison boys, girls fall in Goodland openers
GOODLAND -- McCook's boys and girls basketball team battled it out in with Goodland and Ottawa in the Topside Tipoff tournament in Goodland Thursday.
The Bison boys team came away with a tough 58-56 loss to Goodland in overtime. The girls were also edge out by Ottawa, 55-42.
The girls struggled in the first quarter against Ottawa, before regaining their stride in the second scoring 20 points and ending first half four points behind their opponent.
The Ottawa team manage to take the lead again in the third and fourth quarter to take the win from the Bison.
Austin Wilson led McCook in scoring with 10 points.
Lindsey Hazlitt added in 9 points.
Kelsee Meissner joined in with 8 points. Jessica Harris threw the team's only three-point shot.
The boys took the lead in the first half, scoring 14 points in the first and 16 in second, going 30-22 in the third quarter.
Goodland pushed back in the Bison, adding in 28 points to tie the game and sending the teams into overtime.
Goodland's Greg Farris, Tanner Smith and Travis Angelos put in the team's final points for their win. Josh Cherry led the Bison in the overtime battle.
Cory Gaston was the top scorer for the Bison boys with 12 points.
Chance Unger followed with 11 points. Cherry added 9 points.
The Bison girls play in the consolation round tonight for a chance at the fifth place title on Saturday. The girls play Wray, Colo. at 5 p.m. (CT)
McCook's boys also play Wray in the second round tonight at 9 p.m. (CT). The winner will play the winner of the Norton/Weskan game on Saturday for the fifth place finish.

teams sweep
GOTHENBURG -- Southern Valley's girls and boys teams are on a roll this season.
The two teams played Gothenburg, Saturday and took their second win of the season.
The Eagle girls took a strong lead in the first half and kept their momentum going to get the 70-55 win. The girls are 3-0 after the first full week of the season.
Mallory Murdoch posted 32 points for the Eagles win. Murdoch also had 11 two-point shots and 1 three-pointer.
Ashley Strickland also tallied the points. Strickland had 16 points and 7 two-point shots.
Trisha Siebels added in 10 points and had 2 two-point shots and a three-pointer along with Alyssa Steele who was 1 and 1 in two and three point shots.
The boys team worked hard to earn their win as well. The Eagles edge by Gothenburg 66-64 after taking the first half 43-27. Gothenburg rallied back in the second part of the game posting 16 points in the third and 20 in the fourth.
Taylor Lueking led the Eagles boys to their win. Lueking had 18 points and had 5 rebounds. Jared Maruhn added in 14 points and led the team in rebounds with 8. Brock Einspahr joined Maruhn in rebounds with 8 and put in 11 points and Matt Hoxmeier had 10 points.

McCook-St. Pat's boys down
Hayes Center
McCook St. Pat's boys basketball team hosted Hayes Center Monday.
The B team tied their game with the Cardinals 14-14, while the A team fell 46-16 to Hayes Center.
"We did not play overtime in the B game and ended it at the end of regulation," said St. Pats Coach Rod Gaston.
"Each game our younger players are gaining more and more confidence.
The B team is 1-2-1 so far.
Ethan Doyle and Steven Faimon led the St. Pats B team. Both boys put in 6 points and had 3 two-point shots. William Burkert added in 2 points and 1 two-point shot.
Christner led the Hayes Center B team. Christner had 5 points. Lawson had 4 points and Goltl and McKillip had 2.
Dow took the Hayes Center A team to the win. Dow posted 22 points and had 9 two-point shots and one three-pointer. Lawson followed with 7 points and Bishop had 5.
The A team is 2-2.
Kyle Gaston led the St. Pats A team with 7 points.
Wyatt Kain followed with 4 points and had 2 two-pointers and Alex Broadfoot had 3.
The boys host Hitchcock County on Thursday.

boys split
McCook's freshman boys B team won over North Platte Thursday. The Bison won 25-16.
The McCook A team fell in their game 40-38.
A.J. Huffman led the Bison B team to their win. Huffman put in 10 points. Tye Smith followed with 7 points and Dustin Parde had 4.
Chad Stull put in 9 points for the A team. Smith added in 8 and Marcus Wilson had 6.

The McCook High School freshman girls basketball A and B teams dropped a pair of games Thursday night at home.
The A team lost 65-27 to North Platte Blue. McCook was led in scoring by Adrian Lambing with 10 points and Morgan Chitwood with 6 points.
The B team lost 48-28 to North Platte.
McCook was led in scoring by Alyssa Smith with 14 points and Becky Goodenberger with 6.
"The girls played well, leading after the first quarter," said McCook coach Jon Graff. "But, we stumbled defensively in the second quarter giving up 21 points."
