Bison netters drop rain-shortened duel to Holdrege

The McCook High School boys tennis team had to battle rain, cold and Holdrege Thursday afternoon.

The weather was the big winner as two varsity and one junior varsity match were not completed because of the conditions.

Holdrege won 5-of-7 varsity matches.

"We about got the duel completed, but the weather didn't cooperate long enough," said McCook tennis coach Matt Wiemers.

"Almost every match played was close, which is what I expected going into the duel. It's unfortunate we were on the losing end of the matches, but the guys once again put forth a good effort.

"We opened play dropping all three doubles matches. It is really tough to have to turn around and win 5 of the 6 singles matches. Brett Burton and Jack Latta played well in their singles matches and got us started in the right direction.

"In doubles play, Nate Crick and Brett took a 9-8 (11-9) tie-break loss. The match went back and forth between the teams and our guys put themselves into position to win the match several times. It's unfortunate that they lost the match, but it was a great battle of two equally matched teams."

The Bison JV won 6-of-10 matches against the Dusters. Scott Friehe and Tony Conroy earned wins in both singles and doubles play.

"They have really come on the past two weeks and are improving on their fundamentals," Wiemers said. "We have JV players who are making great strides and are putting themselves into position for the open varsity spots next season.

"They have worked hard and that hard work will pay off for them next year."

The Bison boys tennis team will host their final home matches of the season Hershey at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Bison/Elks Courts.
