McCook Seniors hang on for sweep of Colby

The McCook National Bank American Legion Seniors looked as if they were on their way to a run-rule laugher in the first game of Wednesday night's doubleheader against Colby at Jaycees Sports Complex.

The Seniors scored eight runs in the bottom of the third inning and two in the fourth and led 11-2, but had to rally for a 14-13 win.

The Seniors won the nightcap 8-5 and improved to 7-6.

Colby scored five runs in the top of the fifth and six in the seventh while McCook could score just one in the sixth. Colby led 13-12 entering the bottom of the seventh.

McCook scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 14-13 win. Jon Bryant led off the frame with a walk and stole second and third base.

Ryan Eder singled Bryant home and reached third base on two Colby errors. Eder scored the game-winning run on Alex Sughroue's sacrifice fly.

McCook scored its 14 runs on 16 hits. Andrew Reitz led the hit parade with four singles. Evan Koetter had two doubles and a single.

Bryant had two singles. Tom Larson had three singles. Brandon Kotschwar cleared the bases with a three-run tripled in the third inning and added a single.

Eder scored three runs. Reitz, Koetter, Bryant and designated runner Caleb Morgan each scored two runs.

Sam Frazier singled and scored a run.

Brad Potthoff and Eder shared pitching duties, with Eder getting the win in relief. Colby collected 17 hits.

In the second game, McCook scored one run in the bottom of the second inning, three in the third and four in the sixth.

MNB had 10 hits and was helped by six Colby errors.

Koetter had three hits. Reitz and Kotschwar each had two hits. Frazier, Eder and Cochran each had one hit. Frazier and Koetter each scored two runs.

Frazier pitched a complete game. In seven innings, he allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked five. The Seniors' defense committed five errors.

Colby scored one run in the top of the first inning, one in the second, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.

The Seniors compete in the Crete Tournament this weekend.

MNB plays Seward at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Sunday, the Seniors play Crete at noon and Waverly at 2:30 p.m.
