Bison golfers place 4th at Holdrege; Crick 3rd
HOLDREGE -- The McCook High School boys golf team finished fourth in the 12-team Holdrege Invitational Thursday with a 327 score.
Holdrege won the team title with a 311 score, followed by Lexington at 314 and Aurora with a 318.
The tournament was played at the Holdrege Country Club.
Grand Island Northwest finished fifth at 328, followed by Broken Bow 330, Minden 335, Cozad 339, Grand Island junior varsity 347, Kearney JV 349, Gothenburg 369 and Holdrege JV 369.
McCook senior Brandon Crick claimed third-place medalist honors with a 74. He fired 37s on the front nine and back nine.
Garrett Rippen missed medaling by two strokes as he fired an 83. Rippen shot 37 on the back nine after opening with a 46.
Mitch Hazlitt also played well on the back nine with a 38 and finished with a 84. Aaron Goodenberger added an 86 (44-42), Jack Latta 87 (45-42) and Joe Vetrovsky 90 (42-48).
Lexington's Nate Jaeger captured first-place medalist honors with a 71 score (36-35). Holdrege's Kyle Bell placed second with a 72 (36-36).
"As a team we were pretty consistent, but we have to get more scores in the 70s if we expect to compete in the district," said McCook boys golf coach Dan Hilton. "We have the players to do that because we are now shooting some nine hole scores where they need to be, we just have to put a full 18 together.
"Once again Brandon shot a nice score for us. Everyone else shot a good nine hole score, but let some shots get away on the other nine.
"Garrett double bogeyed hole 18 or he could have been under par on the backside. That is what we need out of him. That was nice to see, after his 46 on the front to give him an 83.
"Mitch also had a 46 on the front side and came back with a nice score on the backside of a 38 to give him an 84.
"Aaron and Jack are becoming more comfortable in the tournament environment and definitely have the capabilities of shooting around that 80 mark and we expect them to get there in the next couple of weeks.
"In Joe's second varsity meet, I was please to see him play the front side in a 42, after playing the back side in 48."
The Bison will host North Platte and Ogallala at home Monday in the triangular and will compete at the Greater Nebraska Activities Conference meet May 5 at Kearney.
