Kayla Wilson has been playing softball since she was in kindergarten.

The McCook High School senior's career will continue for four more years.

Wilson, a catcher/third baseman and a three-year starter for the Bison softball team, signed a letter of intent Wednesday morning to play softball at Hastings College.

She picked the Broncos' program over Fort Hays State University.

"I went down there and watched a game -- it felt like home," Wilson said. "Fort Hays State was my first visit and I liked it, but I felt like I might as well get a scholarship."

With Wilson in the starting lineup, the Bison posted a 27-5 record in 2005, 18-15 in 2004 and 30-3 in 2003 and won three district titles.

The Bison went 0-2 at the Nebraska Class B state tournament in 2005 and 2004 and 1-2 in 2003.

Wilson was an All-Greater Nebraska Activities Conference selection in 2005 and 2006 and was honorable mention All-State both seasons.

Wilson batted .299 during the fall 2006 campaign with 19 runs batted in. During her career, she batted .281 with 45 RBIs.

She overcame a torn ACL she suffered during her junior season in basketball and a back injury her senior year in softball.

"Her defense has been outstanding in her career both at catcher and at third," said McCook softball coach Dale Lortz. "Kayla has been a good leader and a very durable player, fighting through several injuries to keep on playing.

"She has been one of the toughest players we have had at McCook. Hastings will be a good fit since she can play several position -- third, first or catcher."

Wilson said she had fun playing softball at MHS, especially for coach Lortz.

"My senior year was the best because it was my last season," Wilson said. "We went to state and it was a blast."

Wilson is competing in track this spring and said she also enjoyed playing basketball for the Bison girls team.

Wilson, the daughter of Kris and Michelle Wilson, plans to major in radiology at Hastings College.
