Dear Editor,

It is an honor to recognize an area American Legion Auxiliary Unit for its diligence in making Membership a Number One priority. Each of the 339 units in Nebraska has been challenged to make membership a main objective and bring our numbers higher on the chart.

John L. Sullivan Unit No. 318, American Legion Auxiliary, Palisade, Neb., as of November 18, 2005, reached 102.778 percent of its goal with 74 members.

Congratulations! All members are to be commended tor their great efforts in collecting renewals from current members and then bringing new members into their Unit. The Unit's history reveals they have a former "All-Time High" membership of 102 members -- pairing off into two-member teams the Unit could reach its former "All-Time High."

It is attainable. Membership in the American Legion Auxiliary is contingent upon two categories. First, any female relative (mother, sister, spouse, daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, grandmother) of a veteran having served during World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, Panama, Grenada. Lebanon and now the Persian Gulf/Iraqi Freedom conflict is eligible to join an Auxiliary Unit.

If the veteran is living, he or she must be a current member of The American Legion for the female relative to join.

If the eligible veteran is deceased, he or she did not have to be a member of The American Legion for a female relative to now join the auxiliary. Secondly, a female veteran having served her country during any of the above conflicts may hold a dual membership in The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary.

It bears repeating that our Auxiliary units are a visible and vital entity within the community for service to veterans, children, schools, churches, the community and more. Please give the member volunteers of Unit 318 -- Palisade the opportunity to be of assistance. Local contacts are president Helen Miller, vice president Betsy Daniel. Membership Chairman Mary Lou Post, secretary/Public Relations JoAnn Ward. Give these gals a call for more details.
