Garey announces for Legislature
Angus Garey of rural McCook announced his candidacy for senator of the 44th District, to a roomful of supporters Monday morning at McCook National Bank.
"At the urging of family and friends, it is our decision that I offer my candidacy for the 44th district," Garey said.
Having traveled the 44th district several times as President Elect of the South Platte United Chambers of Commerce for 2006, he said he is familiar with the concerns of its residents.
"I am well acquainted to what people are hoping and asking for," he said. "Just as our early forefathers had challenges to overcome, we in the 44th district can overcome our challenges with our vitality and goals."
Garey graduated from Beaver City High School and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He then returned to the 44th district where he farmed and raised cattle near McCook. He has recently retired as a loan officer from McCook National Bank.
He served on the McCook Community Hospital board in its infancy stage, where he was president during the time of construction of the hospital.
Familiar with rural concerns, Garey also was a member of the Red Willow County Rural School District and the Red Willow County Extension Board, and has taught classes at McCook Community College.
As a 4-H leader for 15 years, he judged livestock shows throughout the 44th district for 35 years.
"I've met many young people during this time who are now the backbone of this area," he said.
Presently Garey is a member of the McCook Chamber of Commerce serving on the Government Affairs Committee, a member of the McCook Kiwanis club and the Plains Sportsman Pheasants Forever Chapter, where he served as president for five years.
Garey and his wife Verjean have a combined family of seven children and 13 grandchildren. They are active in St. Patricks Church where he serves as Lector.
