Wednesday, October 19, 2005

SOUTHWEST -- Southwest and McCook's volleyball teams battled it out Tuesday at Southwest.

Southwest won three out of the five sets -- the final score was 22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 15-11 -- but the Bison broke two school records.

Allison Smith broke the school record for the most kills in a match with 19 and Erica Clapp for the most assists in a match with 45.

"I am extremely proud of the girls," said Bison coach Krystal Weber. "We played with a lot of confidence in game one. Game two was the key ... if we could have pulled that one out, I think it would have been a different story in the end.

"It takes a lot of courage to lose two games in a row and to come back and take the fourth game," Weber said.

Jen Chmiel ended the evening with 5 aces and 10 kills. Allyx Shields also had 10 kills.

The Bison are 13-13.

Lisa Lord and Chelsey Quigley were the top servers for Southwest. Lord also led in spikes and blocks.

Heather Teel had 33 assists and three aces and teammate Cayla Skaritka had 10 digs.

"It was a very hard fought match that could have gone either way," said Roughriders' coach Dennis Troester. "We struggled with our passing due to McCook's serving."

"We played our best ball in the fifth set when everything was on the line."

Southwest will host the GPAC tournament next week.
