McCook native seeking office
LINCOLN -- Lincoln businessman Rick Poore kicked off his campaign for the Nebraska Legislature's 28th District seat with an event at a downtown pub Thursday night.
The 51-year-old Poore grew up in McCook and is a 30-year resident of Lincoln, where he co-owns DesignWear, a union-friendly embroidery and silkscreen business with 24 employees. Rick and his wife Jo have a four-year-old son, Charlie.
"When Charlie came into our lives, my perspective on our world and my community changed, as did my sense of responsibility to the future," Poore said. "I want to serve and make a difference for my son and all Nebraska children. I want to roll up my sleeves and get to work on making Nebraska an even better place to live and work."
Central to Poore's goals are improving on Nebraska's rank of 50th in economic development in the nation.
As a lawmaker, he will support policies to strengthen small businesses and challenge them to create good-paying, sustainable jobs. He also wants a viable safety net for those who need it, equal opportunity for all Nebraskans and to make sure our schools have the money and support they need.
He will promote a "Manhattan Project" approach to alternative energy sources and stem-cell research and challenge the University of Nebraska system to be a leader in research and its practical applications. Poore also will work to provide access to health care for all Nebraskans, with attention to controlling taxpayers costs.
"I have a vision for Nebraska. It is a Nebraska as a leader in the nation," he said. "We can be an example of what works if we have leadership with the courage to think unselfishly and act. I want the chance to be that leader."
