McCook's Hailey Buddenberg won the Junior High Girls 1600-meter race with a time of 6:40.

McCook's Brian Roberts was fifth in the Junior High Boys 1600 with a time of 6:23.

McCook cross country coach Tom Sughroue said the Bison runners had a good day on their home course.

"I thought that everyone did an exellent job," Sughroue said. "Almost all of the runners improved their times from last year, some were by seconds while others improved by minutes.

"It was great to see the kids rebound from Saturday's meet, by coming back and running so stong at our home meet.

"I see our course as one of the hardest we see -- the only one that might be harder is the state course in Kearney. This can be and is very intimidating to other runners, we use this to our advantage. Once again I was very impressed with our younger runners."

Oberlin cross country coach Dick Ahlberg said he was happy with the effort of his boys and girls runners.

"Becky (Helm) had a good race," Ahlberg said. "She got out at the start and really competed. Anne Wasson (who placed 59th) had her best race of the season to date.

"Our boys are running together in a pretty strong pack. They got out quickly the first half-mile and were not afraid to compete.

"This was a big tough meet with some of the best Nebraska schools competing on a challenging course. And we were more competitive.

"This is a learning experience for all of our runners. Our times were improved significantly from last year. It was nice to show improvement."

The McCook Bison boys and girls will compete at the Ogallala Invitational next Thursday.

Oberlin hosts its invitational Sept. 27 at the Oberlin Country Club.
