Southwest volleyball team places 2nd at Elm Creek Invitational

ELM CREEK -- Southwest's volleyball team beat out six teams for second place in the Elm Creek Invite, Saturday.

The Roughriders played three very close matches with Pleasanton, Hershey and Elm Creek.

Elm Creek finished third and Hershey took first.

Southwest's Heather Teel and Chelsey Quigley led the team in scoring. Teel accumulated 19 points, most of them against against Hershey.

She had one ace. Quigley totaled 19 points, she also had an ace. Lisa Lord led in blocks with four attempts and eight blocks.

"We played well and faced some very good competition. The Hershey match could have gone either way. The gym was very hot," said Coach Dennis Troester.

Southern Valley also competed winning one match against Pleasanton and taking fifth.

Alyssa Steele led the Eagles in serves and setting. Jenae Perkins and Megan Becker led in attacks.

Coach Suzanne Stanton said, "her team was ready come out and play a tough Axtell team. The girls played hard we just came up short .

"We were disappointed in our play against Cambridge, we just made to many mental mistakes. We were very impressed with the way the girls stepped up against Pleasanton. We never let up and they did what they needed to do.

Wauneta-Palisade beat Cambridge and Pleasanton, but lost to Elm Creek.

Myrah Brown and Betsy Anderjaska led the Broncos in points. Kiane Alberts led in kills and attacks.

Cambridge won the match up with Southern Valley, but lost a close set to Hershey.

Bailey Soucie totaled 13 digs and 56 assists for the Trojans. Cristin Bruckman and Shelby Schultz led in kills.

TRENTON -- The Arapahoe volleyball team won the Hitchcock County Tournament on Saturday.

Arapahoe played three close sets with Cheylin and Hitchcock County to take the win.

Hollie Thomas led the Warriors in setting and had five ace serves against Cheylin.

Brittany Fanning had three aces against Hitchcock County.

Abbey Breinig and Cheryl Braithwait led in kills and attempts. Breinig also led in blocks.
