Chris Wiemers beats Tiger Woods in PGA first round
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- For at least the first round of the 87th PGA Championship, McCook High School alum Chris Wiemers was one shot better than Tiger Woods.
Wiemers, the club professional at Omaha's Eagle Run Golf Course, fired a first-round score of 74 and was tied for 98th place with several others.
Woods, who has won two majors this season and nine in his career, struggled to shoot a 75. But he shot a 74 in the first round of the U.S. Open two weeks ago and won the tournamnent.
Wiemers and 24 other club pros shot better than Woods, according to ESPN.
Wiemers' first-round effort pleased his mother Delores, who witnessed her son's effort at the famed Baltrusol Golf Club Thursday.
Delores Wiemers called the McCook Daily Gazette Friday morning to report her son's first-round play.
"He scrambled all day yesterday -- he scrambled terrificly," she said.
"He hit his first fairway on No. 8 and didn't hit another one until six or seven holes later.
"He was having trouble with his driver, but he got it figured out at the end of the round and thinks he has it figured out.
"We're having a great time and we're looking for a great day today. We're so happy he beat Tiger."
Delores Wiemers is just part of an impressive entourage in New Jersey rooting for her son.
Also on hand are Chris' father Gene, uncle Gary, wife Mackensie, aunts, uncles, in-laws and friends.
Brother Greg Wiemers is his caddy.
Wiemers teed of at 8:15 a.m. Friday. His playing partners for the first two rounds are Don Berry and Alan Morin.
