Cubs tourney wraps up season

The 2005 season ending McCook Midget Baseball Association Cubs tournament was recently played at Felling Field with a 19-game double-elimination bracket.
The tournament trophy was sponsored by Sears.

Engineering Yankees 5
The Yankees scored 2 in the first and the Athletics 2 in the 2nd while being held scoreless in the 3rd and 4th.
The Yankees scored a run in the 3rd and 4th only to have the Athletics put up 4 runs in the home half of the 5th inning to win the game.
A double by Tanner Teel and singles by Tanner Samway, Spencer Bruntz, Marcus Golden, Keegan Williams and Cory Dallam kept the Yankees in the game right up to the bottom of the 5th.
A single by Justin Malleck, Luke Mabile, Adam Rawn and doubles from Hunter Engler and Ryan Powell aided the A's in the win.
McCook National Bank Cardinals 4,
Union Bank & Trust Dodgers 2
A triple by Cody Jankovits helped the Cardinals put up 2 runs in the first. The Dodgers got started in the 3rd with Jake Schlager's score with Chris Lewis and Austin Bishop singling in the 4th.
The Cardinals were held scoreless in the 2nd and 3rd with Keith Wallace doubling and driving in Jankovits for the 4-2 win.

Cleaning Angels 4
Tyler Van Pelt tripled and scored while driving in Matt Chitwood to set the end of the 1st inning at 2-0.
Gonzales scored in the 2nd when Devin
Sughroue singled. Paul Uerling scored in the 3rd and Kyle Craw in the 4th.
The Pirates put up 4 runs in the bottom half of the 5th on a grand slam by Brandon Yost to stay in the winners' side of the bracket.
Singles by Zayne Gillen and Josh Escher kept in close early.

D & S Hardware Cubs 1
Pitching for the Braves would sit down 12 batters during this game keeping the Cubs from getting their bats started.
Riley Lauer singled in the 1st for the Cubs and Alex Knowles in the 2nd, but it would be the 3rd before a double by Kyle Groshong and a triple by Wyatt Kain would put a run up for the Cubs.
Tyson Karr, Brad Baumbach and Tony Roe would single in the first for the Braves and Clayton Korus in the 2nd.
Grant Wilcox hit a home run in the 3 scoring Justin Daffer to end the game 4-1.

Fahrenbruch went 2 for 3, Neel 2 for 2, Burkert doubled and Wallace singled to account for the Cardinals. Rowland tripled and doubled while
Cox and Alberts hit 2 doubles each for the Braves.
Other singles were by Cade Hiatt and Wudke.
At the end of 2 innings it was 2-1 Sox, but by the bottom of the 3rd it was 8-1. The Cardinals put up 2 runs in the 4th but were held scoreless in the 5th.

First Central Bank Athletics 0
The pitching staff for the Astros faced only 18 batters in this 5 inning game allowing no earned hits.
Larson went 2 for 3, Goltl 3 for 3, Broadfoot 2 for 3 and Stewart 2 for 2 with Brown singling for the Astros.
The Astros scored 5 runs in the 4th to seal the win.

Singles by Groshong and Kain (3 for 3) in the 1st gave the Cubs a 2-0
lead at the end of the ininng.
The Yankees came back to tie it in the
2nd and the Cubs put up 1 run in the 3rd to take the lead back.
The Cubs scored 8 runs in the 4th and 1 in the 5th to get the win.
Singles by brothers James and Alex Knowles, Cameron Park, Tristan Thomas, James Kain and Sean Backer helped contribute to the win.

Union Bank & Trust Dodgers 5
The Dodgers put 3 runs up in the first only to be answered by the Angels in their half of the inning.
Bishop homered for the Dodgers while Mitch Collicott homered for the Angels. Singles by Schlager and Skyler Kalinski and Bishop's 2 for 2 performance helped put the 5 runs up for the Dodgers.
Matt Collicott went 2 for 3 with a double and single while Tyler Van Pelt got a double.
Four runs in the 1st and 3rd helped the Angels take the win.
Goltl Plastering Astros 7,
Amfirst Pirates 4
The Pirates jumped out to a 2-0 lead that held into the 3rd inning when the Astros put up three runs.
A double by Craw and a single by Yost were the only hits for the Pirates.
Connor Larson was 2 for 3 with 2 triples while Alex Broadfoot was 2 of 3 with a single and double. Ross Stewart was the only other hit with a double.

D & S Hardware Cubs 5
Saturday morning started off with a close game in which the Cardinals pitching staff recorded nine strikeouts. In the 2nd, the Cubs tied up the game with Alex Knowles scoring after a double and after his brother James singled to drive him in.
Wallace homered in the 3rd to give the Cardinals the lead again. Kain homered in the fifth and a double by Lauer helped put the Cubs up for the top half of the fifth.
A single by Jake Fahrenbruch, a double by Jankovits and a single by Bret Kneel helped put the Cardinals ahead for the win.

First Central Bank Athletics 2
Matt Collicott scored in the first, Escher in the 2nd, Gillen singled in the 3rd and Mitch Collicott singled in the 4th to help put up three runs for the Angels.
Powell singled in the 2nd to start the A's hitting.
Mabile, Cebastion Manley and Rawn all singled in the 2nd.
Austin Blume scored in the 3 while Malleck and Powell singled in the 4th.
In the top of the 5th, the Angels' pitching staff sat down the order to win the game.

LLC Braves 3
After one inning the game was all tied up at 2. In the 2nd,a single coupled with a couple of walks and stolen bases helped put the Sox up by 2 runs.
Wilcox doubled and Baumbach doubled and singled for the Braves while Tyler Rowland, Dylan McConville, Zach Herman and Cody Wudtke singled while Brian Cox doubled for the Sox.

Amfirst Pirates 3
After a 1-1 tie in the 1st and a scoreless 2nd, the Cardinals put up 6 runs in the 3rd.
The 4th saw the Pirates put up 2 runs only to be matched by the Cardinals. Craw went 2 for 2 with a single and a double while Hunter Johnson doubled for Pirates.
Jankovits went 2 for 3 with a double and single while Wallace, Fahrenbruch and Neel singled for the Cardinals.

After a 2-2 1st inning things slowed down in the 2nd with no runs scored. In the 3rd the Angels jumped ahead 5-3 on 3 hits.
The 4th was all the Braves with 4 runs scored and a finishing run in the 5th to seal the win.
Logan Koetter went 2 for 3 with a triple and double with singles from Korus, Karr (2), Wilcox (3) and Roe (2) to help the Braves in the winning cause. Chitwood tripled for the Angels while Van Pelt doubled and singled. Other singles were provided by Gillen and Mitchell Collicott.

Goltl Plastering Astros 5
In the winner's bracket championship, the Sox jumped out to a 3-1 lead that heldup until the 3rd when the Astros tied it up at 4-4.
A scoreless 5th caused the tie-breaker rule to show up. An 8-run inning by the Red Sox left home team Astros in catch-up position in their half of the 6th. One run in the 6th left the win for the Sox.
Wudke went 2 for 3 for the Sox while Cox homered. Singles came from Rowland, Trevor Gleason and Nick Alberts.
Larson doubled and had 2 singles in a 3 for 3 appearance. Singles by Broadfoot, Lucas Post and Stewart (2) helped push the game into the tie-breaker.

Wilcox & Hage LLC Braves 13
The last game of the evening started the 1st with the Cardinals leading 3-1. At the end of the 2nd the Cardinals led 6-2.
In the 3rd the Braves put up 3 runs while the Cards were held scoreless.
The 4th saw the Braves string together 7 runs while the Cardinals did the same thing in their half of the 4th plus the 1 out run. A time limit ended the game at the end of the 4th.
Wilcox singled in the 3rd and homered in the 4th to help put 3 runs on the board for the Braves.
Baumbach, Austin Swartz and Spencer Van Pelt all doubled for the Braves with singles from Daffer and Van Pelt (2).
A double and single by Nate
Sughroue led the Cardinals hitting with singles from Jankovits, Wallace, Jacob Reiman and Chase Downy.

Three runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings was the slow start the Astros needed to get 6 runs in the 3rd.
A home run by Stewart in the 4th and a couple of singles in the 2nd and 3rd helped seal the win for the Astros in his 3 for 3 appearance for the game.
The Cardinals started slow with 1 run in the 1st and 1 run in the 3rd from a solo home run by Wallace in his 2 for 2 day.
Fahrenbruch went 2 for 3 with a double and a single while Neel hit a single in the elimination bracket championship game.
Broadfoot went 3 for 3 with 3 doubles. Larson added another double to the list and Cody Goltl, Tanner Powell, Blake Brown, Cash Bortner and Kyle Gaston added singles in the batting exhibition put on by the Astros.
1st Championship Game

When their first game in the winners' side of the tournament went to extra innings, the crowd knew this was going to be a good game.
The Astros put the first run on the board in the 1st and would wait until the 4th to put any more on the board.
The Sox put up 4 runs in the 1st, only to go scoreless into the 5th when the Astros tied it up in their half of the 5th.
As expected the 4-4 5th led to the a tie-breaker inning in the 6th in which the Astros scored Powell on a double by Brown.
The 6th saw the Sox strand 2 runners before the end of the game.
Rowland, Cox and Wudke went 2 for 3 for the Sox while Broadfoot went 2 for 3 for the Astros.
Brown and Powell accounted for the other hits for the Astros.
The Sox's 1st loss forced the elimination bracket championship game to be played.
2nd championship game
Goltl Plastering Astros 8,
Wells Fargo Red Sox 3
In this game the bats started hot for the Astros with the first three batters earning hits. At the end of the 1st the score was 2-2 and 4-3 at the end of the 2nd.
A 4-run 3rd for the Astros set the winning margin for the game while both ptiching staffs held the others scoreless in the 4th and 5th.
Two home runs by Larson and a double helped in the winning effort. A double and single each for both Goltl and Broadfoot helped the Astros start early.
The championship trophy was awarded to the Goltl Plastering Astros with the 2nd place trophy going to the Wells Fargo Red Sox.
The Astros were coached by Greg Larson while the Sox were coached by Doug Terry.
