Trailing 9-2 in the fourth inning, the McCook Midgets had their backs against the wall.

The Midgets dug deep to battle back from the deficit and beat Alma 11-9 at the Jaycees Sports Complex.

The Midgets scored six runs in the final two innings of the game for a dramatic finish Tuesday night.

"The team got themselves up tonight. They got a couple of hits, and they started talking in the dugout. After this happened, lots of things started happening for us," head coach Mike Broomfield said.

"We played fantastic at the beginning of the game tonight. We had a little moment in the middle of the game where we got a little too relaxed, and Jeff (Lorentz) got into some trouble. Austin Larson came in and got us out of the jam, and the bats came alive."

Lorentz and Larson shared duties on the mound, and Broomfield said he was pleased with both of their performances.

Lorentz struck out two and only allowed two earned runs during his two-inning stint. Larson went five innings, struck out four and walked two in the win.

"Jeff threw fairly well. He just got into some bad situations, so we brought Austin in during the third inning. Austin finished things off for us, and all in all threw a great game," Broomfield said.

After giving up nine early runs, the Midgets clamped down and did not allow any additional runs to cross the plate toward the end of the game.

"We walked some guys early, and that led to some runs for them. We didn't have many errors except a few throws to first. Anyone that has played here at the Legion field knows that the sun is tough to fight on first base, so I really wouldn't consider those mistakes errors," Broomfield said.

After putting double digits on the scoreboard, the Midgets were using their productive offense to their advantage.

Larson and Chad Stull led McCook with two hits each. Stull went 2 for 3 with two doubles, while Larson hit a double to drive in the go ahead run.

"We hit the ball well. As long as we are putting the bat on the ball, we will eventually find a hole," Broomfield said.

Yuma, Colo., will be coming to town on Thursday night to play the Midgets (9-10).

The doubleheader is slated to start at 4 p.m.

"Yuma's team that we have played in year's past has been very, very sound. So we will really have our work cut out for us," Broomfield said.
