Letter to the Editor

False accusation

Tuesday, January 25, 2005

Dear Editor,

We're writing in response to your editorial last week regarding Regent Dave Hergert. Your article asked the question, "Was Dave hergert ignorant of the law or did he deliberately cheat?"

We have to admit that we don't know the answer to that question, but sincerely hope that he didn't deliberately break the law. However, the purpose of this letter is to say that we do know that Mr. Hergert did not lie and misrepresent Dr. Blank's stand on embryonic stem cell research as you stated in the article.

We researched this issue before submitting an Open Forum letter last fall informing voters that Dr. Blank supported embryonic stem cell research.

In checking his voting record, we found that Blank voted at least twice to allow the university to conduct research on stem cells taken from aborted babies.

If the Gazette would have checked this prior to writing your editorial, we're sure you would have concurred on this fact and avoided making a false accusation.
