Hayes Center, Wallace spikers move into next round at GPAC Tournament

TRENTON -- Hayes Center and Wallace advanced out of the first-round of the Golden Plains Activities Conference volleyball tournament Monday night.

In the opening game, Hayes Center defeated Maywood, 25-23, 25-15. Wallace followed up with a straight-set win over host Hitchcock County, 25-14, 25-9.

Top-seed Wauneta-Palisade and second-seed Wheatland both received first-round byes.

Hayes Center was led by Mary Gohl with 8 kills on 21-of-23 hitting, along with 2 service aces. Lichelle Large served up 4 aces and Amy Cox led her team with 9 set assists.

"The girls played OK," said Hayes Center coach Marian Richards. "We didn't have near the intensity we played with on Friday. We always seem to get a slow start on the days we don't have school."

In the second game of the night, the Falcons were held to five kills with 13 hitting errors.

Freshman Megan Cole led with two kills, while senior Kate Voss had two blocks and one kill.

"I was very disappointed that we didn't give them our best shot," said Hitchcock County coach Jon Graff. "We wanted this one badly and ended up frustrating ourselves."

Wallace was led in serving against Hitchcock County by Whitney Hochstettler with 14 points and 6 aces. Tiffany Harris had 10 points and 3 aces.

Harris was 28-of-31 setting with 12 assists. Jessica Smith was 29-of-34 with 6 assists. Angie Scherbath was 13-0f-15 in spikes with 7 kills. Katie Friesen was 14-of-17 with 6 kills. Hochstettler had 1 ace block.

"The girls played a good solid match," said Wallace volleyball coach Kory Rohde.

When Hayes Center returns to Trenton tonight, Richards said her team will need to step it up a few notches, when the Cardinals take on top-seed Wauneta-Palisade at 4 p.m. in Trenton.

Wallace (9-7) faces No. 2 Wheatland in the second match tonight.

The losers of those two games will face off for third place at 6 p.m., followed by the championship match at 7 p.m.

Southern Valley 2,

Franklin 1

FRANKLIN -- Southern Valley used three sets to beat Franklin at the Franklin Invite on Monday 25-20, 14-25, 25-22.

Janae Perkins led the Lady Eagles with 10 kills and three service aces. She also had a team-high 11 digs.

Megan Becker followed with 6 kills and eight digs, while Alyssa Steele finished with 18 set assists.

Southern Valley (2-20) plays at Red Cloud tonight.

Cambridge 0-3

at home Quad

CAMBRIDGE -- In a quadrangular Saturday, Cambridge dropped all three matches, falling to Alma in two sets, while pushing Cozad and Grant to three sets before dropping the games.

Cozad defeated the Trojans 27-29, 25-17, 25-20.

Cambridge was led by 16 kills from Andrea Langley. Lisa Minnick chipped in another 9 kills along with 3 service aces.

Against Grant, Cambridge again opened up with a win 25-21, but then dropped the next two sets, 25-23, 25-16. Kaci Nickerson had a team high 9 kills, followed by 8 from Langley.

Marie Brown had 11 defensive digs in the effort.

In the final game, Alma won in two sets, 25-22, 25-22. The top hitters for Cambridge were Brown and Langley with five each. Misty Mues finished with 12 set assists.

McCook seeded

6th at GNAC

COLUMBUS -- Seeded sixth, McCook will face No. 3 seed Scottsbluff in the opening round of the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference volleyball tournament Saturday in Columbus.

McCook will play at 11:15 a.m. Saturday in the Columbus High School north gym.

The winner will face either North Platte or Norfolk in the south gym at 1:45 p.m. with the loser remaining in the north gym also for a 1:45 p.m. game.

North Platte is seeded second and Norfolk is seventh.

On the other side of the bracket, top-seed Columbus will face eight-seed Hastings at 10 a.m., while fourth-seed Kearney takes on Lexington, seeded fifth.
