MCC volleyball team hosts Otero tonight

The McCook Community College volleyball team will host Otero Junior College, LaJunta, Colo., at True Hall Gymnasium.

The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start.

The Indians are 2-13 after losing three matches last week. MCC lost to Eastern Wyoming Sept. 13 at Torrington 30-17, 30-16, 30-26, Western Nebraska Sept. 14 at Scottsbluff 30-13, 30-10, 30-23 and North Platte Friday at North Platte 30-18, 30-15, 31-29.

In the Eastern Wyoming match, Emily Pernicek had 15 set assists. Ashley Malleck had 9 kills and 5 digs. Jessica Richardson had 7 kills and 8 digs.

In the North Platte match, Pernicek had 11 set assists and Kayla Laird had 9. Malleck had 3 stuff blocks and 6 kills. Ashley Burton also had 6 kills. Laird had 11 digs and Burton 7.

McPherson County

wins Maywood invite

MAYWOOD -- The McPherson County High School volleyball team captured the Maywood Invitational Monday.

McPherson County defeated Maywood 25-11, 25-27, 25-10 in the championship match.

Hitchcock County defeated Elwood 17-25, 25-17, 25-18 in the third-place match.

In first-round action, Maywood defeated Elwood 25-22, 25-12 and McPherson County beat Hitchcock County 25-11, 25-22.

In Maywood's match against McPherson County, Hollie Hansen served 7 points and Nicola Arensdorf 4.

Alyssa Hazen was 38-of-48 setting with 8 assists. Crystal Zwickl was 11-of-18 in attacks with 6 kills.

In the Elwood match, Hansen was 13-of-14 serving for 11 points. Hazen was 9-of-10 serving for 8 points and was 22-of-22 setting with 6 assists. Zwickl was 14-of-18 in attacks with 7 kills.

In Hitchcock County's match against Elwood, Laci Brennan served 18 points, Kate Voss 8, Megan Cole 8 and Lakin Cook 7. Voss was 19-of-24 passing, Cole 17-of-24, Cook 9-of-16 and Trisha McDonald 8-of-16.

Cook had 45 set assists, Kelly Bernt 14, Voss 3 and Cole 1. Voss had 7 kills, McDonald 4, Cole 2 and Brennan 2.

"We struggled early and never really hit our stride," said Hitchcock County coach Jon Graff. "The girls did a nice job of battling through a tough night and found a way to win."

In the McPherson County match, Cook served 7 points, Brennan 7, Cole 6 and McDonald 4. Cook was 21-of-21 passing, Brennan 10-of-11, Bernt 10-of-12 and Voss 7-of-11.

Cook had 29 set assists, Bernt 12, Voss 1 and McDonald 1. Voss had 7 kills, McDonald 3, Cole 2 and Brennan 1.

Rawlins County

spikers now 8-1

ATWOOD -- The Rawlins County volleyball team posted a 2-1 record at its home quadrangular Saturday.

The Buffaloes lost their first match of the season 25-23, 25-18 to Brewster, Kan., but rebounded to defeat Dundy County 25-23, 27-29, 25-17 and Maywood 25-22, 25-13.

Rawlins County improved to 8-1.

The Buffaloes play a triangular Tuesday at Sharon Springs, Kan., against the host school and Oakley.
