Bison runners 4th, 5th at Cozad Invitational
COZAD -- The McCook High School boys and girls cross country teams placed fourth and fifth at the Cozad Invitational Thursday.
The Bison boys finished with 70 points and the girls tallied 75.
There were three McCook medalists.
Shawn McMurtrey finished sixth and Cody Martin 18th in the boys race. Rebecca Rawlings finished 16th in the girls race.
Three Bison runners finished just out of the medals. Ryan Ankerson was 21st in the boys race.Meghan Ecker was 21st and Emily Getchwentner 22nd in the girls race.
"Both the boys and girls did a great job for our first meet of the year," said McCook coach Tom Sughroue. "We had a lot of kids running in their first cross country meet yesterday and were not sure of what to expect. They had a great outing.
"The first two-thirds of the race everyone ran very well, but the last third seemed to give us a lot of trouble.
"I did expect that to be the case due to the fact that I have changed our workout from the past few years.
"Over the past few years we have been peaking to early in the season and seemed to go into a slump before districts. I have held back a little this fall hoping to delay the peak performances for districts."
