Arapahoe boys, Southern Valley girls top field at Arapahoe Junior High track meet

St. Patrick's School McCook-St. Patrick's eighth grader J.D. Stone sprints through the tape after running the anchor leg on the first-place 4x100-meter relay Tuesday at the Arapahoe Junior High School Track Invitational.

ARAPAHOE -- The Arapahoe junior high boys track team took their own team title at the meet Tuesday, while Southern Valley claimed the girls' title.

The Arapahoe boys finished with 94 points for first place, followed by 82 from Cambridge and 70 from Southern Valley. St. Patrick School in McCook was fourth with 63, Southwest had 56, Medicine Valley 51, Northern Valley 51, Cambridge-B 2, Jennings 0 and Southern Valley-B 0.

Arapahoe's Adam Snyder was a two-event winner, taking the gold in the 200 meter dash and the 400 meter dash in 24.9 seconds and 59.6 seconds, respectively.

St. Pat's JD Stone claimed two individual titles, the first in the long jump with a mark of 16 feet, 9.75 inches, and then the shot put at 43-10.5. He also tied for third in the 100 meter dash.

St. Pat's also won the 4x100 meter relay in 54.3 seconds with the team of Cory Gaston, John Haag, Brady Dame and Stone.

Gaston placed second in the 55 meter hurdles and fourth in the 200 meter hurdles, as well as third in the 200 meter dash.

Other top-six finishes for St. Pat's include Michael Jordan, 400 meter dash, fourth, and high jump, fourth; Haag, shot put, fourth;

Robert Proud of Southwest won two events, the 800 meter run in 2 minutes, 18.7 seconds and the 1,600 meter run in 5:19.5

Cambridge's Lance Shifflet was a triple-event winner, taking the two hurdles events (the 55 meter at 10.5 seconds and the 200 meter in 30.4 seconds), as well as the 100 meter dash in 12.4 seconds.

Arapahoe's first-place finishes included Adam Snyder, triple jump, 37-3; and Justin Brooks, pole vault, 7-6.

Southern Valley's Jared Maruhn placed first in the discus on a throw of 123-3.

In the girls' division, Southern Valley-A took the team title with 134 points over runner-up Southwest with 96 points in the 9-team field.

Cambridge placed third with 77, followed by 70 from Medicine Valley. Rounding out the team scores was Arapahoe 38, Northern Valley 24.5, St. Patrick School 12.5, Jennings 6 and Southern Valley-B 0.

Southern Valley was led by triple-event winner Justina Snider, who took the 200 meter hurdles with a time of 35.1 seconds, the pole vault at 6 feet, 6 inches and the 75 meter hurdles in 13.5 seconds.

Teammate Mallory Murdoch won two events, the 400 meter dash in 1 minute, 6.3 seconds and the high jump at 4 feet, 11 inches.

Medicine Valley's Krysta Thompson took the two speed events, winning the 100 and 200 meter dash in 13.4 and 27.1 seconds, respectively.

Cambridge had two double-event winners in Bailey Soucie, who took the 800 meter run in 2 minutes, 48.7 seconds and the 1,600 meter run in 6:20.4; and Shelby Schultz, who won the shot put on 28 feet, 1.75 inches and the discus on 102-11.

Also earning first-place finishes were Allison Hunt of Southern Valley, long jump, 15-3; and Lisa Lord of Southwest, 32-7.

Natalie Sis led St. Pat's scoring wth sixth-place finishes in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.and a third in the 200 meter hurdles.

Sarah Leitner tied for fifth in the 200 meter hurdles. St. Pat's placed in both relay events. The team of Ashley Carfied, Leitner, Heater Bieker and Sis placed fifth in the 4x100, while the team of Becky Goodenberger, Molly Peck, Bieker and Emily Slattery placed sixth in the 4x400 relay.

"The girls did a great job and continue to improve," St. Pat's coach Jim Steinke said, specifically citing sixth-grader Molly Peck who finished seventh on her second try in he 1,600 meter run.

"The girls and boys track teams continue to amaze me," Steinke said. "Placing out of the show heats, our kids overcame some big obstacles for such a tough competition meet."

He added, "Our kids competed extremely well against tough competition an tough odds. We continue to improve in both the girls and boys team each week."
