Medicine Valley claims home golf invite
The Medicine Valley boys golf team captured its home invitational Monday at Heritage Hills Golf Course in McCook.
The Raiders fired a 372 score and edged out second-place Chase County by three strokes.
Dundy County finished third with a 386 score, followed by Wauneta-Palisade 399, Lakeside Central 424, Maywood 430 and Southwest 435.
Culbertson and Elwood did not field full teams.
Culbertson's Garrett Rippen captured first-place individual medalist honors with a 79.
Medicine Valley's John Krull placed second with an 81 and teammate Jordan Wilcox was third with an 87.
Wilcox had the same score as Wauneta-Palisade's Matt Klima, and beat Klima in a playoff.
Placing sixth through 10th with 92s were Chase County's Greg Large, Culbertson's Bryce Cook and Chancey Pickett, Southwest's Jason Ellicott, Dundy County's Derek Larimer and Chase County's Brian Lee.
Placing 11th and 12th with 94s were Wauneta-Palisade's Brandon Hansen and Dundy County's Blaine Rosenfelt.
Elwood's Brandon Hinkle fired a 95 for 13th place.
Placing 14th and 15th with 96s were Chase County's Aaron Sargent and Lakeside Central's Cody Daniels.
Medicine Valley's Ricky Wilder won junior varsity first-place medalist honors with a nine-hole score of 46.
Lakeside Central's John Thompson placed second with a 48, followed by Dundy County's Justin Hardwick 51, Chase County's Tyler Vlasin 52 and Medicine Valley's Andy Houser 52.
Atwood 2nd, Oberlin 4th
at Oberlin tournament
OBERLIN -- The Atwood boys golf team placed second and the Oberlin squad was fourth at the Oberlin Invitational Saturday.
The tournament was played at the Oberlin Country Club.
Colby won the team title with a 330 score, followed by Atwood 347, Goodland 361, Oberlin 363, Phillipsburg 394, Oakley 399, Oberlin junior varsity 468 and Hoxie JV 479.
Atwood's Andy Fikan captured first-place medalist honors with a 75. Oberlin's Matt Mondero placed second with a 76.
Atweood's Adam Holste placed ninth with an 89, followed by teammate Curtis Snodgrass with 90.
"Matt played well again," said Oberlin coach Dick Ahlberg. "Our young players had solid front nines, but lack of experience hurt them on the back nine. They will learn from this. We will be a competitive team before this season is over.
