MCC teams swept by Northeast

Thursday, February 12, 2004

NORFOLK -- A cold shooting spree doomed the McCook Community College men's basketball team to an 82-70 loss to Northeast Community College on Tuesday.

"We were up by 9 points and then we had a little bit of a dry spell in the second half. That came back and got us," head coach Ty Orton said. "But we are starting to see team basketball come back into effect, and that will get us where we need to be."

The MCC defense failed to hold back Northeast as they put up 50 points in the second half and had four players score in the double digits.

Northeast's Brandon Banks led all scorers with 17 points. Travis Test added 15 points.

Teammate Aaron Hanson poured in 13 points and Shawn Swan scored 12 points.

MCC couldn't keep up with Northeast's fire power in the second half. MCC shot 28 percent in the final half.

"We came together as a team, but the outside shot isn't falling for us," said Orton. "We need to improve that. That's one of our strengths."

Brandon Butler led MCC with 19 points and Peere Shackelford added 14. Butler also led MCC with 7 rebounds.

"We've got to continue to fight. This was a tough game on the road and we played a strong game, but it wasn't enough to win," said Orton.

MCC's season record is now 9-15.

MCC's next game will be next Tuesday when they play host to North Platte Community College.

Tip-off will be in MCC's True Hall gym at 7 p.m.
