Agnes L. Arthaud

LINCOLN -- Agnes L. Arthaud, 90, died Sunday (Oct. 26, 2003) in Lincoln.

She was born July 23, 1913, on her parents' farm near Cambridge. Her parents were Henry A. and Mary M. (Hougnon) Arthaud. After graduating from Cambridge High School she received a bachelor of science degree in home economics from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and a master of science degree in educational administration from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.

She first taught rural school in Furnas and Red Willow Counties before a professional career of 40 years on the staff of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She held positions as high school home economics teacher at the Nebraska School of Agriculture at Curtis, 10 years as county extension agent in home economics in Fillmore County, 28 years in supervisory and administrative positions headquartered on the University of Nebraska East Campus which included positions as assistant director for home economics in cooperative extension, assistant to the director and dean of the School and College for Home Economics. She served as interim Dean and director for cooperative extension for six months before retiring in 1979 from the position as associate dean for cooperative extension service.

In 1962, she took a six month leave from the University of Nebraska to work on the staff of the Department of Agriculture of the Republic of Ireland. She initiated and directed a training course for rural home advisors and served as advisor to the department staff in setting up an organization to provide an education program in farm and home management.

Professional affiliations include memberships in Phi Upsilon Omicron as a student in home economics. She later served as college chapter advisor, regional advisor and as national president. She was also elected to membership in Omicron Nu, Home Economics Delta Kappa Gamma, Gamma Sigma Delta, Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement and Epsilon Sigma Phi.

She held life memberships in the Nebraska Alumni Association and in the American Nebraska Association of Family and Community Services. She was a member of the UNL Emeriti Association and Home Economics Commission of American Association of Land Grant Colleges and State Universities. She was a member and an officer of American Association of Home Economics Administrators. She also held active memberships in many other educational, community, civic and service organizations.

Recognition and honors include 4-H Leadership Award presented by the UNL Student 4-H Club, Chester I. Walter "Extra Mile" award for dedicated service to the extension program in Nerbraska, Outstanding Alumnus Award and the Friends of the College Award from the University of Nebraska College of Human Resources and Family Sciences, the Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Nebraska Alumni Association and a member of the University of Nebraska Lincoln Chancellors Club in Lincoln.

She was an active lifetime member of the Catholic church with present membership at Saint Mary's Lincoln. She was devoted to her church, family, friends, profession, world travel and Big Red sports.

Survivors include two brothers, Raymond Arthaud and spouse, Joyce of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Paul Arthaud of Cambridge; two sisters, Mary Colling of McCook and Margaret Graff and spouse, Robert of Beatrice; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Joseph, Vincent and Cyril; and three sisters, Sister Barbara Arthaud, O.P., Mary Eleanor and Jeanette Arthaud.

Services are 10 a.m., Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lincoln with Father Paul Witt and Father Paul Collings concelebrants.

Vigil service is 7 p.m., Wednesday at Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home.

Visitation is 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial is in Lincoln Memorial Park.

Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's School of Endowment or the Agnes Arthaud Scholarship Fund at the University of Nebraska Lincoln Foundation.
